North Carolina

Well I got a odd broody going, she's my black polish, sultan cross. Never had or even heard of a polish or sultan going broody, but she is. Boy she's meanier than any rooster or broody game hen I have ever come acrossed.

And I read that a few of you were gonna go to the April 23 flock swap in Sanford, just wanna let you guys know that it's still on. Seen the ad on craigslist today or yesterday.

Well.......... I managed to get the hardware cloth attached to the windows and all 4 windows are open, letting a nice breeze flow through the barn. The birds were "talking" up a storm once I was done nailing the "screens" in. In case anyone is keeping count, aside from me... the score is Carpenter Bees: 0, Jeremy Fisher (my BO roo) 3!!

I will say, my hopes for digging holes was squashed when a swarm of hornets were hovering around the barn. My allergy won out, and I rushed inside for protection!!

I will admit I have NO shame in

from them!! On another positive note (not getting stung is a positive)...my garden is actually growing!! I was nervous, as I have never planted anything before, but there are peppers, tomatoes and carrots popping their "tops" up!!
wee.gif
I am SO excited. Even my cauliflower and lettuce/spinach are growing. Nothing can surpass my peas at the moment, but that's okay!! So...SCM & BHep, are you two SURE you don't want to come over and help dig holes?? You are closest to me after all.
lau.gif
Still trying.

SCM - I am so sorry your little man is still not doing well.

saying an extra prayer he heals fast and gives your arms a little break.

HT - I think you are a good 3 hours from me...so it would be an all day trip for me, but I'm up for an adventure...I haven't found one place that I didn't get lost getting to!! haha... then again...I don't have room for any more...YET. I'll let SCM & BHep work it out...and then when they get bigger, I'll just go and help myself to what they have.
lau.gif
Just kidding!!

Ramirez - I'm not sure whether to say congrats on a broody hen, or not.
hu.gif
so I will just say...good luck?

Off to entertain the wee one. Have a great day everyone.

HT, WOW! She is gorgeous! What a lucky surprise.

Looking at my chicks this morning, I'm going to get photos... I'm thinking 1 is a roo for sure, but now the other 4 are leaving me not so sure?! Going to have to get guesses on colors and sexes from you guys.

P.s. - I do have 2 japanese bantam chicks (grey) and am 100% they are females. A good deal at $6 for both of them. They are already out in the coop as well, so no need to keep them inside under a lamp.

ISO "The Chicken Whisperer"!!!!

Mainly this post is to just break the "10" post threshold, so I figured I'd have a little fun with it.

I need to get a Chicken Whisperer to come out and break the The ELU (Egg Layers Union) that has obviously taken over in my coop. I have 3 supposedly laying birds but only one egg a day, most days. Now I want this Union Breaker....I mean Chicken Whisperer to either convince them to lay enough eggs for some good egg salad for Easter, or teach them to fish! I am looking at it as a different deminsion to fly fishing...... tie the line to the chickens foot and she flies out and snatches a big ole trout right out of the river! I just think that would be a fair option to put out on the table during these trying times of Labor discussions.....
I know I'm just being impatient, but it sure will be nice when I go out and find 3 great big fat eggs at one time. If I don't get to hollar at y'all before Sunday, I hope you all have a great Easter!

Efudd.... Well, my first question is WHEN did you get them moved over to you. Its been known that moving to a new location can cause stress in birds... stress slows & even stops laying until the birds are calm again. This could be a slow down in product to 1-2 eggs per week, or no laying for as much as 3 weeks until they are settled in. Also, what breed are they? Some breeds are just not good layers, leaving you with no more then 2-3 eggs per week (on a good week). Also, when birds are just coming into laying... like very young, very fresh pullets... it could take 4-6 weeks before the production increases to what it should be. The same is reversed for older birds. Once they aren't a fresh young hen anymore... perhaps a 4 year old hen, production can slow per year from 6 eggs week to 4 eggs a week to 2 eggs a week to 1 egg... then bi weekly in some cases.

I hope you find that helpful!

Okay one more day of work work then It is fun work in the chicken pen. I have gathered my boards to frame in the "under roof" area that stays so dusty to make it a large sand box. I think it will stay cleaner and dry faster when it does rain. I found a landscape place up 42 that has play sand for 40 bucks a yard. seems reasonable. Cheeper then by the bag. Plus I need to re-net the one open area because of some damage by the storm and just weather in general. Then I think it is just general maintance for the summer and enjoy.

So all of you that are hatching cutness...do you do it to sell the chicks, trade or to increase you flocks? I don't know what I would do with all those babies. I have a hard time giving things up. It killed me to give up my silkie roosters. The people that took them probaly thought I was crazy with all the questions I asked. I can't really have any roosters where I am. It makes it hard to get bantams because it takes awhile to identify them. The good thing is I have a good number and a harmonious flock and the only one I would still like to get I a mottled D'uccle. Anywho back to finish my day. By for now.

Another crazy busy day here. Shopping, shopping and more shopping...
Bought a bunch of plants & seeds to put in the garden this weekend. Also bought some deer fence to keep some of the critters out. Hope my chickens stay out.
