LC, I'm not sure if they have a preference. I plan on tilling the area between the yard and woods and planting a "wall" of sunflowers. I figure it will attract plenty of birds, feed mine, and maybe some crows will move in and keep the hawks at bay.

I got NEW hens today!!! YAY pictures coming in a little while.

I called my Rooster Camp guy today to let him know I have room for more "Camp Kenmore" roosters because of all the losses. He said he had a bunch for me and that he felt sorry for me and would help me out and give me a deal on some hens.

I got LUCKY!! He had decided to get out of breeding Delawares so I was able to get 2 hens that started laying in August for cheap. Then he talked me into 2 Heritage RIR hens that will start laying in the next week or so. I really like his RIR because he is striving to get that really dark dark red.

Here are the 4 new girls:

I will probably replace the RIRs with the big White Rocks that I want when I eventually find them. Until then, I have some really pretty hens that will lay plenty of eggs for me.

While I was there socializing we walked passed the grow out pen. In the pen were these stunning chicks(6-8wks old). I asked him about them and he said he bred his RIR to his RIW(Rhode Island Whites). It took a LOT of convincing since this is his first "batch" and he really wanted to see them grown out before selling any but I finally talked him into selling me 2 of them.

I call them Rhode Island Swirls(RIS).

There are many different varieties for sunflowers. I recommend Johnny's seeds, there site should have lots of info as to picking the right varieties for your application!
All the new hatches look great. Enjoy the new year!
