:hit just had to cull one of my Australorp chicks. I only had two, so now her sister is all alone in the brooder. :hit
I have chicks do to hatch out on monday, they are all bantams, but do you think I could sneak my lone chick in there with them? She will 4-5 days on monday.

how long have your eggs been incubatiing for? If they are not on Day 18 yest, i would lift the lid slightly, allow the humidity to go down and then replace the lid. Remember a hen does not always sit on her eggs, and I have found that lower humidity from day 1 to 18 is better so I add no water at all to my eggs on those initial days, then bump it up to around 60% for lockdown....
We are on day 13. A funny story now, but... My temps were going wild a few hours ago, so i thought great my thermostat must be a culprit in part of this, so i switched my HWH one for a new digital one (i thought that well, a hen will get up for a bit, i give myself 30 mins max to do adjustments and figure this out), it is a good thing I decided to do the switch, only because that is how I realized I still had like 3 holes still taped up from the power going out to hold in the heat, LOL. I also did a random candling and 3 of the 4 I did are still moving great!

In honor of St. Patty's Day, I made Black Lager chocolate cupcakes (theyre supposed to be with stout beer, but everyone is out of Guinness...this was the next best thing...and they are really good...super moist and fluffy

Also got some Mille Fluer D'Uccle hens to go with my rooster Noah...he is super happy :)

Good morning everyone!

Well I'm up before the sun, but not before the new rooster, who has been crowing since 1a.m! Started on building two 6x6 pens in the barn for a group of jersey giants and an EE project. Gonna make some bacherlor pens today.
My lone Australorp loves the TV. Last night anytime the TV would shut off she would cheep super loud, so I'd cut the movie back on, and she would quiet right down. :D funny little girl.
I hope to be finding chicks under my broody tomorrow :fl :celebrate :weee!

Hope everyone has a great day!
And good luck to everyone headed to WCA!

Good Sunday morning everyone!!
Just thought I would share a fun little chicken note. I was up ridiculously early this morning (3:11) and was wandering around the house looking for something quiet to do. After occupying a chair and turning the light on low I was lost in a book...out of no where I hear this strange noise which just about gives me a heart attack. The baby, startled by me, starts playing rugby and everything is chaotic for a moment. I am looking around to see what it was...turns out, one of my cochins (who I usually NEVER hear sing...now I know why) laid an egg VERY early this morning, and the entire barn was shouting praises to her. I honestly thought something was being killed in the woods or something...strangest egg song I have ever heard...probably because I am sleep deprived!! LOL There is my odd/funny chicken note this morning. Hope everyone has a great day!!
Those of you heading out to WCA - good luck and may you find LOTS of success in selling/purchasing/trading/etc... The rest of you who aren't going to WCA...have a great Sunday enjoying the weather and your chickens!!

Good Sunday Morning. I got to sleep in today... the little one and the dh are gone for 5 days together... all alone. I was sooooo tempted yesterday to make a trip to Rocky Point and get myself 2 or 3 baby silkies, since I had my brooder all complete(see my avatar pic). I kept resisting and then to stop thinking about it I dusted, vaccumed, and mopped the floor. Well the rain canceled my plans to go outside to rake leaves.

. So now I keep thinking I can take the 1 1/2 drive to checkout the WCA. We planned on going April 22 the day before the other babies are suppose to arrive. I was even researching the WCA... found one video and their facebook site (liked it).

On another note (some of whick stopped me from getting a few silk chicks) was that I did not have my Ecoglow50. Yes I ordered one, was not going to since this is my VERY first batch of babies and I want to see how much we love it and if we will keep pursuing chickens and they are costly. Well I changed my mind quickly after Friday 6 o'clock local news. They were reporting about a house fire, but I was not paying much attention. Then they showed the familys chicken coop, so I looked up immediately. They said it was the only thing that did not burn. The family was planning on raising chickens for their eggs and this is how the fire started. I was like WHAT????

. Oh no... dont let DH hear. Turns out the cat knocked over the heat lamp they had for their babies and it started the fire, poor chickies did not survive. The house was destroyed. That night I got on the computer and ordered one. With me running to town I was to scared after that story. I had to get the Ecoglow50 with 26 babies coming and a trip to WCA in 5 weeks. I figured the $140 shelled out is worth the peace of knowing my house will not burn down while gone. It was not in the budget, but I will find away to make it fit.

To those going to the WCA cant wait to hear what they had. I really am tempted to go, but then I would want to buy, and I can not keep up with those auctioneers and the price so I would end up paying $50 for one silkie or something. I was curious do they every have small coops go for sale? Do they sell heat lamps because I have one of those that needs to be sold or traded.
