Good Morning!
All chickens are well this morning. I finally got Penthouse I finished yesterday and hubby put it up. So now our Juvenile Detention center has two Penthouses. Not many JDs can say that!
We put up Penthouse II a few days ago, but P I needed hardware cloth baby-saver wire. These are rabbit cages that we've mounted in the grow-out room of Chickenhouse 1. A good thick layer of hay on the floor gives them good footing and is easily replaced. After hatch, they've got a box in the living room for a week or so. Once they're eating and drinking well and finding the food, they can go to Penthouse I. Next stage is Penthouse II, which is a bit bigger, and has a J-feeder attached. Next is the floor of the room. Then the old rabbit barn. Then in with the flock. Lots of moving around, but I can check bands easily this way. Both Penthouses have heat lamps, but they are nice and stable and attached two different ways. Obviously, there's a lamp inside, too.
I just realized this morning, that hubby will have to manage two lockdowns and one hatch while I'm in Illinois later this month! We'll see how he does!
I was going to move all my black split hens into the pen with the lavender trio yesterday. I moved the first hen, and the roo was so rough with her, I just let her out. Not just roughly mounting her, but pecking her on the head, and keeping her cowed in the corner. I'll try when they are ready to start free-ranging from the new chickenhouse. I'll put all the girls in first (six of them), then his girls, and bring him last. He'll have to divide his attention then. But if he doesn't settle, I'll have to do something else. He's very sweet to his girls, so I think he'll settle out with them.
I have extra Lavender Orpington roos, if anyone wants one...or two! Or five!
They've grown out enough now that you can tell more what they'll grow out like. They'll likely end up in the soup pot, but I figured I'd give them a chance here. I'll take them to the next swap too, before they go to freezer camp.
Hope everyone has a good day! The sun is shining here and it's lovely!
