Good Morning!

All chickens are well this morning. I finally got Penthouse I finished yesterday and hubby put it up. So now our Juvenile Detention center has two Penthouses. Not many JDs can say that!

We put up Penthouse II a few days ago, but P I needed hardware cloth baby-saver wire. These are rabbit cages that we've mounted in the grow-out room of Chickenhouse 1. A good thick layer of hay on the floor gives them good footing and is easily replaced. After hatch, they've got a box in the living room for a week or so. Once they're eating and drinking well and finding the food, they can go to Penthouse I. Next stage is Penthouse II, which is a bit bigger, and has a J-feeder attached. Next is the floor of the room. Then the old rabbit barn. Then in with the flock. Lots of moving around, but I can check bands easily this way. Both Penthouses have heat lamps, but they are nice and stable and attached two different ways. Obviously, there's a lamp inside, too.

I just realized this morning, that hubby will have to manage two lockdowns and one hatch while I'm in Illinois later this month! We'll see how he does!

I was going to move all my black split hens into the pen with the lavender trio yesterday. I moved the first hen, and the roo was so rough with her, I just let her out. Not just roughly mounting her, but pecking her on the head, and keeping her cowed in the corner. I'll try when they are ready to start free-ranging from the new chickenhouse. I'll put all the girls in first (six of them), then his girls, and bring him last. He'll have to divide his attention then. But if he doesn't settle, I'll have to do something else. He's very sweet to his girls, so I think he'll settle out with them.

I have extra Lavender Orpington roos, if anyone wants one...or two! Or five!

They've grown out enough now that you can tell more what they'll grow out like. They'll likely end up in the soup pot, but I figured I'd give them a chance here. I'll take them to the next swap too, before they go to freezer camp.

Hope everyone has a good day! The sun is shining here and it's lovely!

Okay, I ordered an incubator. Someone had PMed me about some handmade ones, but didn't respond to my reply, so I ordered the 1588. (I would still like to hear about the handmade ones, though!) I ordered the bator, turner with chicken racks and quail racks, and a 12 volt adaptor for a battery, so next time the power is out, I can DO something about it. When the power went out before on my dozen bantam eggs....three hatched.

I still want to order a liner for the incubator, which I saw somewhere, but can't find this morning. Anyone know where I saw it???

Inlaws have postponed until tomorrow evening, and will leave Monday. And I don't have to go to the meet, either. Yay! So, more chicken stuff to do!

Now I get to wait for the incubator to arrive!

I also finally ordered poultry bands the other day. Both the little wrap bands and numbered bandettes, so I can keep track of who is whom out there.

Chicken math. It's working against me.

Will guineas eat fleas?

If not how can I get rid of them? This year has been the worst.

If they do, how many guineas do I need to get? And where can I get them?
LOL

Morning ya'll! It's a great day! I'm lucky enough that DH and I work 4 ten hour days a week so we get Fridays off! Woke up to my rooster, Cluck Norris, crowing and my peacock Mickey hollering. How do people NOT like this!? I just don't understand....

I think it's the absolute BEST way to wake up ever! I hate it when I have to get up earlier than sunrise, as I miss the wonderful "alarm clock" sound of roosters crowing and birds twittering.

PEOPLE NEAR RALEIGH:

My office has about 3,000 tomato and pepper plants sitting in the parking lot to distribute for free today. Please pass it along and come get some for your garden, neighbors, church, etc.!

It's at 8354 Six Forks Road in Raleigh. Please come say hi to me in the office if you come by! I'm in Suite 201!

Good afternoon everyone! Does anyone in the Caldwell County area (Lenoir/Granite Falls) know if there are any peafowl laws in place? I have scoured every inch of the internet, and so far, nada.I'm going to be getting my state permit to sell eggs and chicks, however it states nothing about peas. I wish these things were more clear, so it caused less hair-pulling

I need some help. Our property is pretty much on the side of a mountain. Do any of you have any recommendations for providing housing for chickens on the side of a hill? We're running out of room!

I just had to rehome my gorgeous roo because of my pissy next door neighbor >:/ He's been crowing for a year now and she just started whining about it so I decided not to risk losing my whole flock just for him :( I'm horribly sad but I've got 5 pullets from him and another hen is setting right now. Would love to get more info on the swap this weekend in Burlington?
