Just checked the elevation of Alturas, according to Wikipedia it is over 4300 feet. My parents are in Oak Run, CA at about the same elevation. They will get heavy snow that will last the entire week or more on the ground, even after it has been plowed. They have spent 17 straight days without electricity.

I live in the Rogue Valley, Illinos Valley in southern Oregon, we have many micro-climates here. Right now it is hailing outside but local weather called for showers. We get twice the rain totals they report on the weather, it's just where we happen to live and the way the storms blow in.

They have temperatures on Accuweather also that may help if you have town names.

Wilbilt, chicks are gone, you escaped!! Will be making baby Welsummer's soon! Ha, ha! No real escape (for me at least)! The twenty-two young'uns (end of February chicks) are encountering their first thunderstorm, looks they headed back to their baby coop pretty well!

Thank goodness. I only have six (they are about the same age), but they are a little cramped in the coop. Yes, the hail hitting the tin roof had them a little freaked yesterday afternoon.

I need to explore other options for a place to keep my breeders as my contract with Sienna Ranch may be coming to a close.



I am able to pay for land that I can rent or lease. I need about 700 square feet (of course more is always better LOL) and there must be easy access to water.



Ideally someplace close to lafayette/walnut creek area, but I'm also open to other ideas.



I'm also considering a partnership with someone that lives a bit more remotely.

Hello Chowmaine, I am on Mendocino Coast and was unsuccessful looking for breeder nearby. I ended up getting hatchery stock from a feed store.

Hello, I live in Redding in the north end of the state on the inland side, right at the very top of the big central valley. Our town allows people to have 6 hens but no rooster, with certain requirements for square footage between other houses and the chicken coop. It seemed pretty workable to me. I have 5 hens, 2 EE, 2 australlorps and 1 Cochin, 2 dogs, 2 cats. I live in a neighborhood and so far no one has a problem with my chickens. However, at this point they are still very quiet and I'm not sure how it will be when they start laying.

Everything is going very well. The only immediate concern I have is that it's supposed to start getting hot, with temps up around 100 so I think I'm going to install a row of misters for them. I noticed that some of them start panting in the heat. The only one I'm really concerned about is the Cochin since she's got those feathered feet it must be harder for her to cool off.
