Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

My Polish, the oldest are 3 buff sisters. One of them has hung herself upside down 3 times, nails caught in wire pen. This one just once. Not the sharpest nails in the box.

I dispatched 2 this morning. The one dying I had put her in my bathroom last night, still alive this morning, gasping. The other one has been sleeping with her head in her feathers, skinny, and walks a bit, then sits down. RIP. I will still have chickens, but just a few.

Yes, Schnebbles, I have really had enough. So, they will dwindle themselves down. Last night I called Nava who has some Sebastopol geese for sale, and we are going up to see them this evening. One of her male geese gets in her lap. He steals her cell phone too.
I hope someone has a kiddy pool local.

I can't incubate anymore. I get left with too many roosters that I can't rehome. So I'll be selling my incubator. I'll keep my cheapy for goose eggs.
Seminole, I get it...it is a rotten battle to fight and the heartache sometimes way too much to bear. A break may be a good thing right now and geese and or ducks is a great way to heal some of your pain and tiredness. Without mine, I don't think i could have made it through, trust me.

Heal, relax and breathe. When you are ready again, as I truly believe you will be, contact me and I'll send you some eggs mixed with the DC birds I have that seem extremely resistant to the Marek's. They won't be show birds...but they will survive.

Schnebbles, Yes , roo feels a bit heavier. But One of the 3 is pooping the evil green poop. Oh Gawd I'm so obsessed with poop!

I got a catalog from Meyer's and have to say they are RIGHT ON. First off, they are offering some beyond the norm breeds. But the important thing is they are STRONGLY suggesting Marek's Vaccinations. If you get started chickens or pullets from them they ALL get Marek's and a bunch of vaccinations. At least someone out there is listening.

Meyers isn't too far from me. I know they recommend vaccines.

I want my favorelles NOW, lol! impatient here.

can green poop be a sign of Mareks? If yes are you referring to dark green or fluorescent green? I always thought that was a sign of bile. I read that some where...can it mean Mareks also??

From my own experiences, it is showing failure of the liver. There are things you can do to help with this, like giving turmeric either sprinkled on the feed if still eating or mixing with a bit of water and giving orally with a syringe. If the Marek's has progressed to the point where there can be no return, sometimes it's kinder to just let them go and either cull or give supporting care until you can't anymore.

Regarding green poop... This is just one of the many reasons tube feeding is good. If tube fed and the poop returns to a normal color, you'll know that the green was due to starvation.

Yes! This can be a sign of starvation and does not always mean the bird will die!

However... If you tube feed and after many days the green poop (bright green, almost chartreuse) does not go away, there are very likely that failures happening in the bird's body. Marek's lymphatic tumors can grow on the liver, kidneys, and can absolutely wreak havoc on how the digestive system works. The crop often slows and the proventriculus is often irregular and inhibits the ability to properly digest.

It's why the 'bright green poop' is one of those things we sure hate seeing.

Kathy has a good point about the tube feeding (which is very simple).

Nambroth - thanks for clarifying the bright being almost chartreuse! I have actually seen more deep, forest green. What does that mean? That's what my last girl had, she died and I think it was mareks.
