Rooster was a polish or Black copper Maran. Hens are mixed. I have silver wyandotte, sexlinks, orpington, lavender ameraucana and Rhode island reds

Does your Maran rooster have any feathers on his feet?
If he does, that could be where some of the chicks get their feathered feet.

Not that I see. I went out last night to check all the hens/roos because I was blown away I had chicks with fuzzy legs. I cant see where any of it came from. The chicks though are a gorgeous black with yellow markings. I dont think I'll mind at all!! Yellow wing tips and belly markings. Cute

I thought because they were picking at the shavings they would eat their food.

I like to cover bedding with paper towels the first few days.
And put feed and water on a tote lid, so they can eat of off that until they find the feeder.
