I want to know what a good feed would be....my chickens don't seem to care much to lay pellets or to lay mash....they eat it but seem bored with it....
I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
I once fed my chickens Scratch and Peck feed, which is organic whole grains, and they went absolutely crazy over it. But it's only sold in 10-25 lb bags which are $34. So very pricey.
My chickens are currently on Purina Layena pellets.
You could try scattering from scratch feed in their normal feed to get them more interested.
I feed Flock Raiser to my chicks at 6 - 8wks, whenever they finish a 10# bag of Chick Starter, I ferment feed so it stretches. I add a dish of Oyster Shells when they show signs of laying. This way I don't need to purchase different stage feed, I'm limited to 6 chickens in my neighborhood. Flock Raiser costs more than Layer but I like the idea of more protein. I've read others feed All Flock or All Purpose with Oyster Shells on the side. And Glad you joined us.
Greetings and welcome to BYC. Glad you've decided to join us. There's a wealth of information and experience shared in the various threads and wonderful members who will gladly offer help and advice when needed. Of course what works for one doesn't always work for another. I recommend that you put at least your general location in your profile for that reason. What works in AK might not be the best advice for birds in FL (or Australia @Teila ). We have folks here from all over the world!
You didn't mention what breed your birds are, or their ages, or how many, factors that might have bearing on what feed would work best. They may be "bored" with the feed because you are overfeeding them... Just a thought as a chicken's crop is pretty small and it takes a while for them to process what they eat. Many leave food out free choice and the chickens will eat what they need then stop. So they'll eat a little bit off and on throughout the day.
As was said above, please feel free to share pics of your birds. We're all really a bunch of chicken voyeurs and love looking at other's birds/animals/farms/coops/whatever Please browse around and jump in when you feel the desire. Make yourself at home!
