NOT OFFICIALLY SPRING YET, BUT IT IS IN PREDATORVILLE!

Ah, ok. It must be hard for you to get around your vet training. I am an animal lover, but I've learned a LOT about nature & sometimes when we release an animal somewhere else, it really isn't best for the animal. I know you mean well, but the truth of the matter is, it's very stressful on the animal. It's disoriented & has to fight for new territory. I am willing to put the animal's comfort above my own & just shoot it for a quick death. I get no joy from it, it is just a job that needs to be done to protect my flock. Everybody has their way & comfort level. I try to imagine how our ancestors survived when settling the country. They raised crops and animals & had to fight off a heck of a lot more varmints (and more formidable ones) than we do today.

I completely agree with you. I just couldn't do it. I thought about bringing it to the hospital and euthanizing it. I just felt relocating it to an unpopulated area gave it a chance. I get what your saying though, really i do and you're right. I just didn't have it in me. We live in a little beach community on the same block as a school. My husband was in the military and wishes he could just shoot some of these predators. It's illegal for him to even use an air soft gun or bb gun in our yard. I wish he could because the squirrels eat more of the chickens food than the chickens! I would be ok with shooting something that would harm our chickens but since we can't, i think our only option is drowning or beating it and i just couldn't do it.

Oh wow, that really sucks! I see where you're coming from! I started with a BB gun & moved up. Then again, we're on the smallest lot of 18 acres in the country & nobody says boo when shots are fired. TOTALLY different environment! At least you fixed it! Good going! Cats are pretty resourceful, should be fine.

Oh & around here, we would be charged with animal cruelty for drowning or beating any wildlife. Gov't here would rather you trap &/or shoot any nuisance animal. Just goes to show you how laws differ from one area to another.

Dives my husband crazy! He has a few assault rifles And is a member of several ranges but would get 10yrs in federal prison if he shot a pellet gun in our back yard. Doesn't make any sense. Thanks for understanding.

oh we would be charged with cruelty too! All i can do in my county is trap it, call animal control who will come and pick it up and release it a mile away. The animal would be back the next day. That's why i just release it myself well out of travel back range.

hi,sorry for jumping in,but what do suggest for cheap predator deterents night&day??

(im not rich,no game cams or sprinkler system)

We just have a really secure coop. No gaps, the run wire walls are buried so nothing can dig under, double locks on the doors, etc... I put the food away at night because i think it drew predators to the coop. It's when i free ranged my girls that i lost some to predators. If you free range, it's inevitable at some point in time.
