I've been told both for this 9.5 week old barred rock. I assumed it was a rooster until others on a local byc page started saying he may be a she. No crowing or eggs yet to confirm.. but wondering what the consensus is on here.

It's not a Barred Rock. That's a Black Sexlink cockerel.

Welsummer pullet, just about ready to lay. Males never have that coloring.

Patience. Remember, they've never done this before, and they don't have any adults to show them. Some dummy eggs in the nest boxes will help them get the idea of where to put those eggs.

9.5 weeks is too young for male specific feathering.

You just blew my mind. We ordered a mix basket... And all pullets --- so with the chick being black with a white dot I hadn't even assumed to look at chick colouring in our other mixed basket. I think you just helped solve some crazy issues!

We wanted a rooster or two but we were told there weren't any! I thought this was a barred rock hen then rooster--- but this explains all the back and forth!

Same for me when I got our sexed pullets from tractor supply. 3 out of 6 were roosters...

I got them through our local feed mill. They came from Townline Hatchery.
