The one you are questioning is male. Saddle feathers don't lie.I got sent four RIR (I think) for free with an order from a hatchery. Just because of that, I was immediately assuming they are all boys. Three definitely are but one of them is throwing me off. It has a green curvy tail like I'd expect with a roo (I thought girl RIR were all red and only boys had black/green tail feathers), or kinda. It's more like just one long curvy feather lol. The saddle feathers aren't as prominent as the others at least to my eye though and the comb and waddles are significantly smaller than the other three. The other three almost all look identical. Here are some pictures for comparison. Ps, please ignore the ugly scabs, we currently have dry pox![]()
Here are the ones I know are roosters.
Here's the one that's throwing me

Photos in natural lighting please. Artificial lights and camera flashes can make it difficult to capture comb and plumage accurately.Hello! New chicken mom here, and first off Id like to say how helpful this page is. You all rock. But anyways, I have 4 four-week old chicks that I rescued from a science experiment as eggs. I have no idea the sex or breed. And, judging from what Ive learned, I think I have all males....please tell me Im wrongthanks in advance!![]()
