Here's pics of our "Sam" Any thoughts?

cockerel

Here's Number 1 again. These are more updated pictures. They're about 6 weeks old now. Chick #2 can also be seen here.

----------------------

Here are some pics of chick #2 (brown one) - Their comb seems to have a side spike/bump

Thanks for any help you can give!

Chick #1 is definitely a cockerel, and I think chick #2 is a cockerel as well. The side spike/bump is just an extra appendage on the comb. All the chicks I hatched from my RIRs had that, so I think it might be a result of inbreeding? Not good for show birds, but there's nothing actually wrong with it.

I was asked to look for a second opinion on these two! The others are all sorted out. (I have lots of Roos!

"Rex" - sorry, he's really good at avoiding pictures! Hope these are OK. Thought he was for sure a cockerel but his feathering/tail are starting to look pullet-y to me? I'm no expert! Would love your thoughts.
*mama could be my white australorp or a white mixed breed.

Chick 4, as I call it!
*mama is proooobably my SLW, otherwise I have RI reds, australorps, SS.

Chick 4 is as big as its buddy here - but it's comb and wattle aren't nearly as pronounced. And I want to say while thickish, its legs aren't as heavy. For reference, here's the buddy who is most certainly a cockerel and looking to be from the same mama:
I think you have all pullets there.

Umm ... both pullets, I think.

Hello, i would like to know what I have here.

Was sold to me as Swedish Flower hen hatching eggs. But beside of that I am wondering of their gender.

Chick 2:

Are you sure they are 9 1/2 weeks? They look a little younger to me (I may be wrong, of course). Keep an eye on the last two, they look kinda like cockerels. the first one is looking like a pullet so far. :)

Sorry DuckGirl77,
I corrected my post. They are of course not 9 1/2 weeks old but 5 1/2 weeks.
Oh no!! Someone in a German chicken forum told me that the second chick was a cockerel. But I will not believe that. I had such an aweful hatching rate, just 3 chicks out of 20 eggs, and one of these three chicks is surely a cockerel; so I have two out of three.

Do you think so because of the slow feathering?

Oh, OK, that makes sense. I had an awful hatching rate, too, when I tried, and for some reason I always get so many roos.

Believe me, if those were mine, they'd all be roos!
I'm judging from the size of the comb. I don't know much about slow feathering and what it means for gender. You see how in the first picture, the comb is the same size throughout and it's still small? That means it's probably a pullet, although it may be a little too young to tell. In the second and third pictures, the comb is growing more at the middle, kind of like an arch. Plus, the comb is somewhat large. However, it's still kind of young to say anything for certain. In a few weeks, you should be able to tell :) I hope for you that you don't have two cockerels!

I wish I would not seen what you mean, but I see it.

I am sorry for you and I am sorry for me. Too many roos are awful.
And thats not everything. I just had awful ones, just raping my girls.
The truth is I have three in line that needs to be send to a better place. But at the moment I do not have the nerves for it, but had to do it. It is hard here (in Germany) to find a new home for a good roo, but for a rude one it is impossible.

I know how annoying it is to have a rooster when it should be a hen!! I ordered 2 Black australorps back in march that were both supposed to be hen and one is a rooster. I also ordered 5 Buff Orpington hens and 2 of them were roosters. I ordered 5 Speckled sussex hens and 1 is a rooster. ALL IN THE SAME BATCH. That hatchery seriously needs to step up their game.

I had such terrible roosters, too. They would chase the poor hens around and beat them up. If I had been thinking, I would have separated all the roosters from the hens so the hens wouldn't get stressed. I don't have the heart to kill any chickens, so I finally reluctantly gave them to someone who has lots of chickens. I didn't ask questions, so I don't know what happened to them. I am never hatching chicks again unless I give them all away at once or they are sex-linked and I can just get rid of the cockerels.
I hope that you have mostly girls, at least. Maybe the comb is just big for some other reason? You technically don't know for sure yet, but its looking like two roos so far.

What hatchery is it? I used Ridgeway, and have ordered a total of 24 pullets from them and got a total of 8 roosters.

I am never ordering from them again unless I need a rooster (I doubt I ever will) or the chicks are sex-linked.
