cockerel
Chick #1 is definitely a cockerel, and I think chick #2 is a cockerel as well. The side spike/bump is just an extra appendage on the comb. All the chicks I hatched from my RIRs had that, so I think it might be a result of inbreeding? Not good for show birds, but there's nothing actually wrong with it.Here's Number 1 again. These are more updated pictures. They're about 6 weeks old now. Chick #2 can also be seen here.

Thanks for any help you can give!

I think you have all pullets there.I was asked to look for a second opinion on these two! The others are all sorted out. (I have lots of Roos!)![]()
10-weeks old
Father is brahma/Wyandotte cross
My original post is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1109445/10-week-old-chicks-sexes
"Rex" - sorry, he's really good at avoiding pictures! Hope these are OK. Thought he was for sure a cockerel but his feathering/tail are starting to look pullet-y to me? I'm no expert! Would love your thoughts.
*mama could be my white australorp or a white mixed breed.
Chick 4, as I call it!
*mama is proooobably my SLW, otherwise I have RI reds, australorps, SS.
Chick 4 is as big as its buddy here - but it's comb and wattle aren't nearly as pronounced. And I want to say while thickish, its legs aren't as heavy. For reference, here's the buddy who is most certainly a cockerel and looking to be from the same mama:

Umm ... both pullets, I think.
Are you sure they are 9 1/2 weeks? They look a little younger to me (I may be wrong, of course). Keep an eye on the last two, they look kinda like cockerels. the first one is looking like a pullet so far.
Oh, OK, that makes sense. I had an awful hatching rate, too, when I tried, and for some reason I always get so many roos.Sorry DuckGirl77,
I corrected my post. They are of course not 9 1/2 weeks old but 5 1/2 weeks.
Oh no!! Someone in a German chicken forum told me that the second chick was a cockerel. But I will not believe that. I had such an aweful hatching rate, just 3 chicks out of 20 eggs, and one of these three chicks is surely a cockerel; so I have two out of three.![]()
Do you think so because of the slow feathering?
I had such terrible roosters, too. They would chase the poor hens around and beat them up. If I had been thinking, I would have separated all the roosters from the hens so the hens wouldn't get stressed. I don't have the heart to kill any chickens, so I finally reluctantly gave them to someone who has lots of chickens. I didn't ask questions, so I don't know what happened to them. I am never hatching chicks again unless I give them all away at once or they are sex-linked and I can just get rid of the cockerels.I wish I would not seen what you mean, but I see it.![]()
I am sorry for you and I am sorry for me. Too many roos are awful.
And thats not everything. I just had awful ones, just raping my girls.
The truth is I have three in line that needs to be send to a better place. But at the moment I do not have the nerves for it, but had to do it. It is hard here (in Germany) to find a new home for a good roo, but for a rude one it is impossible.
What hatchery is it? I used Ridgeway, and have ordered a total of 24 pullets from them and got a total of 8 roosters.I know how annoying it is to have a rooster when it should be a hen!! I ordered 2 Black australorps back in march that were both supposed to be hen and one is a rooster. I also ordered 5 Buff Orpington hens and 2 of them were roosters. I ordered 5 Speckled sussex hens and 1 is a rooster. ALL IN THE SAME BATCH. That hatchery seriously needs to step up their game.
