Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

I'm not going to argue over it but the fact is that this chick came from those two as those are the only birds it could possibly be and as i said the other hens are identical anyway. Here are some pictures of the other chicks from this pair if that helps.
Have you, at any point in the last 3 months, had a different rooster or cockerel? The black chicks are not possible with the stated parents. The black pattern gene is the most dominant of all pattern genes. It does not hide. It simply is not possible. Neither of your claimed parents are black. They can not produce a black chick. They do not have the genes required to produce such chicks.
June, Are you a geneticist? As a geneticist I would say highly unlikely, but not impossible. Every once in a while there are new mutations that pop up, it's why we have so much variety in the species to begin with. It's usually highly rare, so I would agree with your suspicions, however if they say that they have no black chickens, there are 2 other explanations: someone else's hen laid the egg or rooster fertilized it (non-paternity/maternity) or the chick has a new mutation (rare, but not impossible).

Can you all help me with the sex of this 7-8 week old Buff Orpington? I have two, and this one has a larger comb than the other. First two pics are of "him" and the last is comparison to "her" who is the same age!

Rooster??

Pullet?

I think we had a 50% consensus on if the above chick was a Roo... and we did end up with a really nice pretty boy! He's a good roo so far. I named him Jaime. The pullet above is now Cersei... Ha!

We are 100% sure that these are the parents, our cockerel was black as a chick is that helps. Definitely no other hens or cockerels involved! Will try and find a picture of the cockerel as a chick but not sure if we have one. Do remember he was black with a white spot on his head as a chick.

Hi all, I posted this in another area before I saw this thread, hoping you can help me out....

I'm stating to wonder about this one, supposed to be a pullet, but I have 2 Wyandottes and this one is starting to look quite different from my other. Approx 7 weeks old, I've lost count exactly. Hen or roo?
Thanks!!!

LOL, so, update on my SLW, "she" was renamed "Chuck" and most def a cockerel, we heard his first very pathetic attempts at crowing 3 days ago, hilarious!!! He was giving it his all but only got a few ruh-roos out. He is only about 10-11 weeks now but getting bigger than the other girls quickly, and has beautiful greenish teal tinged black feathers coming in. He is def more aggressive towards the other birds in our backyard (like the Jays and Robins) hopefully he turns out to be a good protector of our little flock.

Beautiful birds..

Thank you! I think they may have started something!

Thanks for the info, here are the pictures of the parents, guessing pullet then.

They are beautiful. He does have black in the tail, but amazing he looked all black as a chick. Wonder if he could be considered barred black with extreme red leakage. ??? I have a working knowledge of genetics, just not the specifics of chicken genes. This is all very interesting.

June, I hope I didn't offend you. A pet peeve of mine from working 11 years in genetics is that I never say 0% and I never say 100%, because at some point we'll find the exception to the rule or another explanation. You are awesome in determining the genders and breeds from the pics. Thank you for contributing so much to this thread.
