OKAY. So, my chicks are 11 weeks old now. Trying to get standing profile pictures but they have a large run and don't like to sit still, so that's a work in progress. I DID get facial pics of all four. Hopefully I can finally figure out if I got more cockerel than the one I ordered...

Look at the wing. Red there would be male on the BCM.

At 11 weeks, some pullets will have comb/wattle growth and a pink hue. None of them are red so I wouldn't fire up the frying pan yet.

Look at lower backs for emerging saddle feathers. Very skinny, shiny, sharply pointed feathers there = male. They'd show sometime in the 3-6 month range and much more reliable than gauging comb growth.

Aren't they too young for saddle and hackle feathers? I thought those came in closer to sexual maturity. I don't think the BCM has any red on the wings, though.

Then the BCM is female. Males have red wing patches that should show at least a few splotches by now. And yes, the saddles would just be starting to sprout on some but that is what I'd watch for over the next several weeks since none of them look remarkably more developed in the comb/wattle department than the others.

12 to 16 weeks is typical for saddle feathers. Although you generally have to search for them in the underfluff.

Additional photos of the 5-6 week old EE chick in question. The EE chick to the left appears to be a pullet, much smaller with single slightly pink pea comb. The chick in the front is a red comet. Thanks to all for your input regarding the cockerel. He will be rehomed tomorrow!






He is establishing hierarchy already. Other chicks are on the floor about 2 feet lower!.
