I can't really tell much on Nutmeg. The good news is that you'll eventually get a definite answer in time.

What's the age?
* If 20-25 weeks, then perhaps a pullet. (Shanks look thin & it has a short comb....but the red-brown color patches usually mean male in several breeds.)
* If less than 20 weeks, then I'd be watching for more rooster traits to pop out. I've never seen a pullet with that splotchy red color before, but I've heard they can exist if something like RIR is in the mix.

Nutmeg is a Orpington. I'm not exactly sure on the age.....but I'm estimating about 5-6 months maybe. Some ways Nutmeg looks like a hen but the personality is all rooster minus crowing. Its spur is growing bigger than my other hens have ever grown but I heard some hen can grow them as long as rooster do so I don't know. Nutmeg wasn't from a hatchery but from a breeder. He/she looks like the dad in color anyways.

Nutmeg looks closer to about 12 to 14 weeks old, and that dark patchy red through the shoulder/wing is screaming cockerel.

Ok lol I'm awful at aging chickens......I used to be pretty good at telling gender but not anymore since all the chicks I would raise never made it to laying age til this year.....I wonder what I did different?

I had a beautiful pair of 5mo barred rocks, never really took the time to say which was which.
Unfortunately today I found out that one was missing and I wasn't able to find it :-(
I've put the remaining one in a cage with a female araucana I have, could anyone please determine it's sex?
