Not sure what kind this little guy is, I'm hoping you all might.

In reading the OP's first post, 8 of these "packing peanut" chicks were included in a shipment of ducklings from a hatchery. In that case they are likely all males.

He is either a RIR, production red, or possibly New Hampshire.

That makes sense. I didn't think the chicks weren't ordered, just unexpected breed or something. But they can not be sure they are males even if it is likely, so it would be wise to wait a little and see how they turn out.

I agree on the breed, time will tell for sure.

You can't tell that Peanut is a rooster unless they have been vent sexed, which isn't 100% accurate anyway. A beginner should NEVER vent sex a chick, as they could easily be hurt or killed.

I'm not sure why you're telling me this, I'm not a beginner and I never implied I'd tried to sex Peanut or that I intended to. I know that there is a 90% chance that Peanut is a boy because he was filler. I thankfully knew that there would be some filler boys (though I did not expect this many) so I had a plan in place to rehome them, however I got attached to this one little guy and my flock doesn't have a roo.

I didn't mean for that to be offensive. I'm very sorry that it was taken wrong.

You said they were boys, which does imply they were sexed, and the only way to accurately (though it isn't 100%) sex a young chicken that you don't know the breed of is vent sexing. I didn't know if you were or were not a beginner, I just said that to be safe. Anyway, I'm sorry that I didn't say that in a different, better way. Have a wonderful day (or night, I guess!) and hope all goes well with you and your birds!

It's all good, I would NEVER try to sex a chicken, while I've learned a lot about them, and handling them, and caring for them, the closest I ever intend to get to vent sexing was caring for my prolapsed chick a few months ago. I'm leaving that stuff to the pros.

Me too! Maybe I'll learn someday, but I'm scared I'll hurt one. That's awful about the chick, were you able to successfully help it?

Oh yeah! She's all grown up now, and should start laying soon. I caught it quick enough that it wasn't a real problem thankfully! I'm honestly not even certain which chick it was now that they're big. I am only in my second year of backyard flocks, and I feel like I've dealt with more stuff than lots of people who've had flocks for 10 years. It's been a wicked time.
