Overly wet soil can cause a nutrient lockup, and plants will not take up any nutrients. The reason for this is because the nutrients that are in the soil is transferred from the soil to the the plants by water and if the plants are not taking in water, then they are not in nutrients. Once the soil dries out and the plants start taking up water again then they will also start taking up nutrients.
