November 15th Quilt Swap

Finished! I have enjoyed making these and when they are all laid out they look so good as more patterns appear.

Very pretty !

I'm about half done (taking pictures along the way of how to do it via stripe or "speed piecing" for anyone not started yet, I will post the first step pics now, & the finish it up steps in about 2 days)

This is how to do it via "stripe" or "speed piecing" PART 1 -- (what I have photos of so far)

PART 1 - STEP 1 -- cut out your stripes

PART 1 STEP 2-4

Sew the entire length of 1 SAGE to 1 CREAM (repeat 8 times)

Sew the entire length of 1 SAGE to 1 PINK (repeat 4 times)

Iron to set seams (flat as sewn)

--- more pictures of the next steps in a day or 2...

Well I just had the first (day early) hatcher from those shipped eggs I got.
& it reminds me I intended to have these blocks finished b/f these eggs hatched !

My 1st hatcher from a shipped egg & my 1st ever Speckled Sussex.

I have done enough on the blocks that I need to take 1 more photo to complete the instruction illustrations then can upload pics.
Then I can finish off the blocks while the rest of the chicks emerge, how cool is that :)

There are 2 pipped SFH , a bunch more SFH eggs, 2 Wayendott, 3 B/B/S Ame, and 1 more SpecSux that made it to LD.
Will do photos of the fluffies too...

so which will it be first, the quilt blocks & eggs, or the chicks ;>

Speed piecing PART 2

P2step1

P2 step2

P2step3
Take the pink&sage pressed open and lay on the pink strips leaving a small space between and heading the pink to the top, sew 4 long strips (half your remaining pink strips) on the left half on the right to make 2 diff types of blocks, see photos below:

note there are some small wasted pieces when you cut them apart, this allows you to make sure each is perfectly square when you cut apart.
Here are what you'll have after doing the stips one way (4 strips this way)

Now you need to do the other 4 sewn on the other side, this pic shows one of each, see how they look similar but are mirror images of each other

Now you have all your 9 pieces available to go ahead and assemble your blocks

I hope I've given enough detail to explain this speed method :)
And now I need to race the rest of my hatching eggs to the finish...

Love the instructions thanks. I'm getting ready to set some eggs, so what kind are you hatching, love to see new babies. Read the previous post on your babies.

Final count on the shipped eggs was 4 hatched from the CA eggs, 0 from the KY eggs (OH sorting station strikes again).

The hatchers were the 1 Spec. Sux, 3 SFH of which I have 1 acting great, 1 w/ 2 messed up toes but doing ok, 1 that appeared fine but has acted sluggish and is not keeping up growthwise w/ even the bad toe chick so I'm a little worried those shaken eggs might have given it an internal issue so it looks ok but isn't ...time will tell.

I'm not done w/ the our swap blocks, so the eggs won the race. But I will finish up soon so

@katsdar pls pm me your mailing addy to send the blocks to you (figure you don't want to publicly post it on the wide open internet).

Hope everyone is doing well w/ their blocks.

I have one other good chicken news -- my CL pullet from a spring hatch started laying last week and the eggs are good sized already so I'm quit happy about that, and hope her hatchmate SFH also starts laying soon so I'll have winter eggs this year :)

Found new use for chick grit, I always have left-overs then can't find it when I need it next.
Make pincushions, place the grit in the middle, wrap in light batting and then stuff your pincushions. The batting keeps the grit inside and the grit will keep you pins and needles sharp without rusting or getting damp.
I'm going to try making some scrappy mini blocks to turn into pincushions for tuck in gifts at Christmas and birthday times.
