That's strange. Poor chicks. I've never had problems with mama adopting newly hatched chicks- when her chicks are also newly hatched. One of my hens will not accept new chicks after the 1st 2 days. For some reason she regards them as intruders. My other frequent broody will take any chick at any age. (She doesn't even care if that chick belongs to another hen!)Thanks! I am hoping she will accept it as her chick. I have actually been a bit concerned about that, because as I was watching her with the others earlier, she kept pecking and chasing off the black ones, acting like she thought they were not hers, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to bring them inside. And this one is also black. I hope I can do a good job sneaking it under her, and that she won't chase it off.

Some people sneak their extra chicks under the hen at night while mama's asleep & not going to move around or peck. I simply slip them under the hen during the day, so I may stick around to watch.

I've had both types of hens. Once I had two girls hatch out their eggs at the exact same time. One was fiercely protective, even to the point of attacking the other hen's babies. The other hen was overly motherly and wanted every baby for herself. I had to seperate the girls from each other but after a week or so, when I tried to free range them all together, it was a disaster! In the end, I ended up taking the babies away from the violent hen and giving them to the sweet hen to raise.
Oh wow, just realised I said almost the exact same thing as FridayThanks! I am hoping she will accept it as her chick. My Goodness! So many Broodies!!!!Oh, my! I would have had two of them hatching chicks today, but I ended up restarting the other one a week ago, so she now has two more weeks to go. I do have another broody who looked like she was concerned about the babies today. Hers are 3 weeks old, and she is a very good momma. I wondered if she would adopt chicks from the new momma if they needed it. I don't think our other one would (hers are 4 weeks old). She was not interested at all.
