As a desert dweller it's the best season to hatch and brood for me. A/C is off, windows are open, and resting in the shade is an option not a requirement.I didn't know it was ok to hatch in fall and winter! Good knowledge here!
I candled the duck eggs and had three quitters on the shipped eggs and low fertility on ny own eggs. I think with the cold my flock hasn't been in the mood. I'm left with only three that ever started developing of my ducks' eggs and those fortunately look good still. The shipped eggs I've got 8 of the 11 looking good.
I made a video of the candling and can't believe how boring (and sleepy) I sound, but it's been fun having some of my friends and family following along on this hatch's progress.

I'm always nervous about moving the incubator. I worry I'll jostle the eggs... or worse. Do you have a lamp you can move to where the incubator is?Just found this thread in researching "what to expect when you're expecting" lol.
I began with 11 eggs in incubator
6 from Alabama (hopefully satin silkies)
5 from my Vanilli (silkie)
Lockdown starts tomorrow and I'll have 9 that made it this far! 6 from Alabama still going strong and my girls 3.
I do have a question before I go in lockdown:
I have the incubator in a dark area this whole time...but I won't be able to see all the way around for pips where it is at currently. Should I MOVE the incubator to a brighter area so I can monitor them during this time?
Ah I didn't think bout that...I've got it up on a book case in a corner in room...so there's no way I can see what's going on in half the incubator. (Didn't think placement ALL the way through obviously - my first time!)I'm always nervous about moving the incubator. I worry I'll jostle the eggs... or worse. Ah, yeah, that would be a tough spot. Maybe remove the eggs one by one to a carton, move the incubator, then place them back in. You may be able to pull off moving the whole thing together, but I don't trust myself with that kind of thing.
