November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

TOMORROW AT 11:30AM IS LOCKDOWN!!!! AHHH! So excited! Since we have a self put together incubator, working on raising our humidity tonight. Working great so far

Random Question:

Anyone hatch quail before? I don't know what I would even do with quail, we only have chickens and turkeys, but I've noticed the eggs on ebay are always like 5-6 dozen opposed to like 6-8 for chicken eggs. Is it that their hatch rate is so low? Or do they just lay an abundance of eggs? Anyone keep quail? I know this sounds dense, but what is the point of keeping them? For ornamental purposes like a peacock? Doesn't seem like you would get much for the meat or eggs. And 5 dozen eggs is going pretty cheap on there!
i've hatched about 20 or so button quail and buttons are purely pets as the are way to small to consider eating but coturnix or jumbo cotturnix are often raised to be eaten,,,you can also eat their eggs since their just like chicken eats but much much smaller. a female quail will lay 1 egg a day everyday...they sometimes slow down in winter like chickens but usualy you get an egg a day so yes they are good layers

the are ornamental and you have to keep them penned up no free ranging as if you let them out they will most likely not come back and button quail(what i have and raise) can only outside when its nice out...if it gets to could outside buttons will die.

i keep my buttons inside in 106qt sterilite tubs with hardware cloth over the top with some insect screen to act as a lid and the do very well...they also require high protein feed of at least 24% protein though i've heard people using 22% but the quail grew slowly and took longer to lay

i love my quail..their beautiful and cute and i just love the noise they make and they eat a whole lot less then chickens...my 12 buttons go through up to 10lbs of feed a month....my chickens(cochins, serama, and duccle) gor through probably 60lbs a month

Daisy decided to even the score with Max. This is Max's turkey crumble.

But Max didn't care because he went to work with me today andwe had Taco Bell for dinner.

It looks like now of Saras eggs started, so I put in 8 more. 4 of Sara's, 2 of Sages, 1 of Cinnamon's and a mystery egg I found in the yard. It wasn't from the 3 that are laying. Too small. Someone new has started but has only laid one, that I can find any way.

Soooo I set eggs last Monday then this Thursday my little Ameraucana/leghorn/Australorp mix decided to go broody on me... She is only 5 months old - is it normal for hens to go broody at such a young age? Do you think I can trust her to set eggs?

I was thinking about moving 5-8 of the 13 eggs I set under her from the incubator once I am confident she will stick with it. Right now she is sitting on one egg that she laid Thursday. I could put that egg in the incubator when I swap out for the eggs already in the incubator under her.
