November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Yesterday I checked my eggs and went to sleep around 9:30 AM. It was VERY windy and the power was out when I woke up around 4pm. The incubator temp was down to 62 degrees, not sure how long the power was out for but I imagine a while, I got the incubator plugged back in and warming up around 5 pm. They are approximately 5-6 days through their incubator period at that point.

I know eggs can tolerate some periods of lower temps but what is the likelihood they will make it? Should I expect quite a few losses and those that do develop could they have issues with health? Wondering if I should just start saving more eggs to try again...

This is our now 5 week old chick hatched from our broody hen. Do you think it's a hen or a rooster? I am leaning towards rooster, but curious what everyone else thinks. Daddy is a RIR and mama is either a White Leghorn or a Red Sex Link. Not sure which the egg came from.

Thanks to all that helped me with my first hatch... we now have little Kona... the cutest baby silkie around :)

Do broody hens chip away at expired eggs? I've had 2 hens do this now. My latest one today. A chick was apparently struggling to hatch and never made it past making a large hole (about pencil eraser sz). When I went to chk on it I noticed a lot of the eggshell had been chipped off but not the membrane. The chick had obviously expired. I just wanted to know if this was normal.
Hi, Hens will sometimes try to help the chick out...................

I'd say roo, and I'd say momma was a red sexlink since they are usually created with a barring patterned bird.
