They are just a bunch of wet chicks. I was going to wait for fluffy pictures. So you left partly zipped chicks alone for two days? wOw, that's self-control! It rests and then tries again, so I figure it's just working in its own time.![]()
There are now four Faverolles X EE, 2 Faverolles X ?? (options are SLW, SS, or cuckoo Marans...there were also Welsummer X hens but I don't believe any of the viable eggs are Wellie X). One blue copper Marans out, the one slow zipper Marans and another one starting to zip. One more Faverolles X ?? zipping like mad, 2 more Fav X EE pipped. Four unpipped yet out of 16.
Mahalo for your support. Are you going to make the BYCPNW party on Saturday?
The one with what you think is a blood ring is likely nonviable. I would wait and recandle at Day 14 and then you will know for sure...if the chick has not grown in those three days and not moving, you can take it out of there. Sometimes they just quit. :-(Just did my last candle until lockdown. We are at day 11 now. My temp DROPPED drastically today while I was at work, so I was very concerned that they would be lost. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised that more eggs than I thought last time are alive and wiggling like crazy in there!! It never gets old seeing those little boogers in the eggs! I pulled 3 suspected clears and when I opened them they were indeed clear. That puts me at 17 viable (I think) eggs in the bator. I need advice on one egg. It is a green/blue EE egg. This time I could see thru when I candled. I saw what I THINK is a blood ring. There is a VERY RED circle within the egg with the biggest concentration of blood in the bottom (pointy) end of the egg. I can see a chick in the egg but don't see any movement. Is this in fact a blood ring? Does this mean the chick has died? My other EE cross egg is doing great! Both my leg horn cross eggs are doing awesome also. The rest are various shades of brown so I don't know which is which!
It would have been fun to meet you! Half the Fav X chicks belong to the flockmistress where they came from. She is going to try to slide them under a broody Silkie. My half will be available though *poke* and since you have new chicks you could just slide one or two in, right?Oh no, I meant that the issues didn't occur with chicks who hatched right on time in perfect conditions like yours
I think the latecomers (day 23) who got stuck could have been affected by me removing earlier chicks from the hatcher. I had a wide spread of hatch dates, eggs set 2 days apart; and on top of that, the first batch hatched early (d20) and the 2nd batch hatched all the way through d23..only the d23 chicks seemed too big for the egg and/or dried out. Maybe because I had removed the chicks who were hatched? a little complicated to explain.. LOL and no I feel I didn't have really good self control.. I opened it probably 3 or 4 times more than necessary, and it just makes you question yourself in hindsight. Edit: I mean, why did that one Wellie boy die? three other chicks hatched at the same time as his zip, and not only was the humidity good, but wet chicks raise the humidity.. yet his beak was crusted to the shell. why did this happen?...
Sorry, no, I am not going to the BYCNW party.. have fun though!
Your Fav crosses sound COOL! I desperately want faverolles but everyone local stopped laying for winter. grr..
