November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

One thing I hate about hatching is having to give some away. I gave away my beautiful Sally today, her frizzle friends and my Mille Fleur D'Uccle.

I worry too much about the bantams getting eaten by hawks. And I don't want to leave themm locked up all of the time. I have decided to give away all of my bantams and stick with LF. I am only keeping a few Silkie incubators. How do you, the ones that sell or cull, do it? I've got to figure out a way because this it's horrible. I want to breed next year but I'll have to cull a lot and sell. I have to figure out how to get past worrying about some one else taking care of my chickens, I mean their chickens. When I say cull, I just mean give away because I am way too much of a sissy to do it any other way.

Oh Deanna, you have such a soft heart.................It's nice...........
When I hatch a clutch that I know cannot stay. I simply Do not let myself get close...............
I still handle them because I want them to learn not to be afraid..also to enhance their chances of being adored by their new family............
I do not know if this will help..but many of the customers I get come to me specifically because our chickens are so friendly.
I am sure you will gain that reputation... Your kindness may be a hidden asset......
Two of my egg customers buy eggs from us because they believe the eggs are better due to the lack of stress on our hens..........
I have had to euthanize a few babies.... I have kind of a ritual which includes a lot of love and tenderness........Hate it.......
Only when there is no hope or I know they will suffer.......
You'll do fine............I bless them and kiss them on the head when they leave. There are lots people who will be as thrilled with your babies as you are........Really............

It's just part of the deal. I do the best I can when finding buyers for those I intend to sell, as they are my family. When I say cull, that means freezer camp. I tell the chicks I will do my very best to care for them while they are here, with kindness and respect for the fact that they will help feed me later. I am steeped in native tradition that holds all life in high regard. Carrots or cows, the fact is we kill to eat. Just because you can't hear the carrot scream as you rip it from the earth doesn't mean it doesn't.

Great, now I can't eat carrots.

I will hear their little screams. I eat meat, I just can't butcher it myself. I am too much of a wimp. I can't swat a fly. I shoo them outside or point them out to Max and Max eats them. I know eventually I will have to do something when my chickens are walking around with canes and walkers. But for now, my chickens run free, behind a 6 foot fence, under plastic netting.

My first baby I've ever hatched in an incubator! Was just too excited not to share :D
congratulations!!

He's getting some of the Delaware coloring in his wings. Just over a week before more babies are due.

He is going to be so handsome!

A little update on my welsummer girl with the open navel.. it's shrinking!!

I am keeping it clean, but it looks like its going to dry up and fall off. it doesn't bother her in the slightest, and so far, no one has pecked it.

Her middle toe is still a little bit crooked after wearing a boot on and off, it was worse. I think it may have been broken day 1, maybe in the incubator when she was thrashing around?

With the help of my DH, all our chicks are now vaccinated for mareks! It was.. quite an experience. Nothing can quite prepare you for putting a needle into something so small and delicate. The poor things had to go through me learning on them, too. I felt bad, but we got it done. We have hatchery stock in the flock already, so all future birds here will have to be vaccinated for mareks...guess I better get good at it.. :\

also.. I ordered more eggs.. HEHEHEHEHE!! christmas hatch??
