November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

I'm with Ben...Are you sure they're gone? What day are you on? I've had great movement throughout my incubation but the closer I got to lockdown, the darker the mass and the slower the movement. I started lockdown Sunday night and only had movement in five out of twenty-two. I was very worried. However, this morning I have three chicks and five more pips...NONE of which were the five that had movement Sunday. It's almost like they were settling in to hatch and the ones that we're moving still need a little more settling. Give them more time.

This is a great, thanks for sharing.
What day are you on? Chicks have periods of movement and rest. They rest to save up their energyfor the next big step. Rest, pip internally, rest, pip shell, rest, zip and some take a break while pipping. I have had some stop moving on day 16 resting up for the big event.
I was at day 13 and now I am at day 17. I didn't throw any away just in case and kept trekking along as if they were/are fine. Tomorrow is LD so we'll see in 3 days or so I guess. No one is stinky, so I guess that's a plus. Thanks for the encouragement though. I really appreciate it guys.

WARNING: Skip this post if you have a queasy stomach.

What causes multiple malpositionings when using an automatic turner? So far 4 silkies that have pipped have all been upside down in their shells and have died. I put the larger end up in the incubator but when I received them, the narrow end was up in the carton used to ship them. The air cells were on the larger end. I'm a little worried that none of the 4 remaining will survive either. Thus far, it hasn't happened to any of the other types of eggs and that is the only difference I can tell between them. One of the little ones did have scissor beak though so maybe that was a blessing.

20 minutes later: This latest one (#5) died in the shell so I thought. I set it aside (still in the incubator) and went about my chores. It started chirping at me. I went to assist since it was really dried out and I couldn't find the beak. Started to peel the shell off to see how it was positioned. All of a sudden it started to bleed (but not where I was working), so I stopped. I held it (still in its' shell) as it died. When I went to take the shell off (which was kind of stinky), I found something rather disturbing.

What, pray tell, is this?! Is that the internal organs that developed on the outside? Is it a Siamese twin? A tumor
If the color of the yolk in this pic is true, then there was bacteria in the shell while the chick was developing. Entering through the shell. Either from an egg that was dirty, left over bacteria in the incubator, bacteria transmitted from handling the egg. Healthy Yolk sac should be a pretty bright yellow.

Judging by this site I have 5 good eggs and one that is definitely bad. I can also smell it so I think it is rotten.

I haven't been this excited in a long time!!! YAY!!! I can't wait till hatch day!

Get the stinking egg out ASAP before it explodes!

Yay! Lockdown begins tomorrow for hatch number 2! After culling some clears and a couple of blood rings at day 10, the 23 I have left seem to be doing great.

The first hatch is just over a month old now and they are growing like weeds. We built 2 awesome A frame tractors for them so they could get on the ground and enjoy the grass, weeds, bugs and dirt. OMG do they ever LOVE the sand. I offered 'play sand' in a separate dish from the beginning and they attacked that stuff like it was crack. It worried me that maybe they we eating too much sand, but they were happy and healthy with no pasty butts. Why argue with success?
Tonight, for the first time, they finally found their way to "bed" without help after a week of having to tuck them in every evening. I was so proud!

We'll be adding on to the present coop to make room for all my new babies when they outgrow the A frames. Lucky me, I was only hoping to get a pen built that was half the size of the coopsI have now, but it would appear that my husband is as addicted as I am... he wants to add on space equal to what I already have with a covered aisle between the two. lol!

After looking at so many chicken pictures on here, ya'll make me want at least one of each! Such beautiful chickens! I never knew there were so many different kinds!!
I wish I could free range mine during the day, but the hawks would probably clean me out pretty quick. We've also got owls, coons, skunks, possums, fox, cats and dogs to worry about.
There is just something so relaxing about watching chickens scratch in the grass.

Sorry to ya'll who have lost babies. I have been following the stories. So sad. It is, however, nice to know I hang out here with such kind, loving people.
Love that turkey story too! Go Max!

It was pretty accurate coloring. I didn't wash any of the eggs before incubating them as I read that's not wise. I bleached the whole incubator/turner before using and I wash my hands before and after handling the eggs. I'm pretty sure it was from the dirty eggs, if anything.

Question...I still have 4 eggs in the incubator. One of the last chicks to hatch drug his/her shell around and got blood on one of the 4 remaining. Is that going to be a problem? I have a week to go with them.

Yay, hatch update! Three out of four faverolles from my last hatch are out. The last one I had to help - it was so healthy and big it was too large to finish turning and zipping, so I popped it right out. I think the last egg may have died, I candled and it appears the veins have receded and there's no movement. The duckling due tomorrow, however, has internally pipped!!

Oh, and for anyone keeping up on my hatching addiction, I have 30 silkies due the thirtieth, 5 silkies and 9 blue salmon faverolles due the first, and 8 salmon faverolles due the first or second. So 52 eggs :th
