November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Quote: I was being silly saying I don't want them in the house and my husband doesn't want them in his shop during our freezing nights...I was suppose to stop hatching so they would be feathered and not at risk before it hits.....but....I looked at ebay again UGH!! so now I might need to keep some in longer than I normally would!

those of us down south don't have a huge worry usually but Pyxis is up north......I just wouldn't want them in the house too long even though I love them....pew!

you can absolutely tell when the chicks hatch if they are from a healthy flock! mine eat well like yours! if I put an egg in from my girls it hatches a sassy spunky chick....those that I've bought same thing when the chicks hatch if they are weak and wane you just know they're parents are lacking in nutrition!

I just got a call to come babysit for a friend that has to do a surgery followup. I just know they are going to hatch while I'm gone.

Here's to hoping they wait a bit more.

oh my.....poor little one....I guess don't let that girl have babies again!!!

just give it a dish of chick food and a baby waterer....I dip their little beaks in the water so they know what and where it is...I might do it a few times a day until I see it drink on it's own!
I also use shiny marbles in the food and water but you don't have to they usually pick it up easily!

enjoy you baby...post picks

Sara woke me from a nap knocking on the doggie door. I let her in. When she was little she slept in the laundry room. She wanted to check out the laundry room as a possible location for her egg. She is so serious. She is on top of the wood chip bag. Maybe that will be the one. If I can train my chickens to lay their eggs in the house, I will be thrilled. Then if the go broody, I can keep an eye on them. Oh yeah! Go Sara go!

I am already aware that I am strange but so are my pets so, we all feel comfortable.

Whoosh.

I am on Day 8 and I believe I am already rocking back and forth at my seat in the madness. But it is lovely I get to see so much life through this thread.

I just jumped right in. Sounds like you are in broody city. I just have the one broody right now. I love using a broody because you aren't the one doing it she is. I would say to be prepared with a brooder in case your girls aren't as good at being mommies as they are at sitting on eggs but other than that just let the process work itself out. I candled the other night and think I have two infertiles under my Australorp but I don't know for sure so I left them for now. Will check those two again in a few days and candle all of the rest on day 16 or 17 but other than that I am pretty hands off once I give her the eggs.

Good Luck!
