November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

WARNING: Skip this post if you have a queasy stomach. [rule][rule]What causes multiple malpositionings when using an automatic turner? So far 4 silkies that have pipped have all been upside down in their shells and have died. I put the larger end up in the incubator but when I received them, the narrow end was up in the carton used to ship them. The air cells were on the larger end. I'm a little worried that none of the 4 remaining will survive either. Thus far, it hasn't happened to any of the other types of eggs and that is the only difference I can tell between them. One of the little ones did have scissor beak though so maybe that was a blessing. 20 minutes later: This latest one (#5) died in the shell so I thought. I set it aside (still in the incubator) and went about my chores. It started chirping at me. I went to assist since it was really dried out and I couldn't find the beak. Started to peel the shell off to see how it was positioned. All of a sudden it started to bleed (but not where I was working), so I stopped. I held it (still in its' shell) as it died. When I went to take the shell off (which was kind of stinky), I found something rather disturbing. What, pray tell, is this?! Is that the internal organs that developed on the outside? Is it a Siamese twin? A tumor?
like your 1 said up there its a yok sack that needs to be absorbed and this from my experience with incubaters happens when you open the incubater too much and the temperture goes haywire in the incubater

5 out of 5 for my second hatch! YAY!!!!! What can I hatch next???

I've been keeping an eye on the temp & humidity and it's stayed constant within 1 degree or two. I've been letting the chicks dry off in the incubator and then snatching them out when I see them climbing on those trying to hatch. Incubator has been open only long enough for me to get the chick and close it again. :( Then again, there could be a little girl that's sneaking peeks, though I'm doubting it since she knows how crucial it is for that to remain constant.

this always happens with my last egg that still has to hatch in the incubator but also happens if the eggs airhole is set the wrong way round and if a chick in the egg is really sticky and if theres a brown liquid it mostly means that the incubator is opened too much

I always just wanna grab the babies out of the incubator since its so addictive for some reason! but its best to leave till half of them hatch first and then take the hatched ones that helps alot

We just completed out Day 14 candle and weigh.

Remaining, 32/47 started with (14 clears and one blood ring)
Target average weight 50.5g, actual weight 50.25g. As close to bang on as we can get it!

4 Days until lock down!

Today has gone so badly that there is only good left. I woke up with a fever a very sore muscles. I was rushing to do chicken chores so I could get back to bed. I didn't even see Penny (my first hatched chicken) until I counted and started looking for her. All I saw was a big ball of feathers hang from the slats of a chair. I thought it was by her neck. I ran over and was so happy to see her litte face looking up at me. She was the one I had to hunt down using my chicken positioning system. I think since I saved her before, she stayed calm and waited for me again. Her foot is swollen. I think she will be ok. She didn't fussor fight me at all. Such a good chicken. I don't know how long she was there. Maybe an hour. I heard a bit of comotion but it stopped right away so I didn't worry. Max is lending Penny her heating pad for the leg.
