November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

WARNING: Skip this post if you have a queasy stomach. [rule][rule] What causes multiple malpositionings when using an automatic turner? So far 4 silkies that have pipped have all been upside down in their shells and have died. I put the larger end up in the incubator but when I received them, the narrow end was up in the carton used to ship them. The air cells were on the larger end. I'm a little worried that none of the 4 remaining will survive either. Thus far, it hasn't happened to any of the other types of eggs and that is the only difference I can tell between them. One of the little ones did have scissor beak though so maybe that was a blessing. 20 minutes later: This latest one (#5) died in the shell so I thought. I set it aside (still in the incubator) and went about my chores. It started chirping at me. I went to assist since it was really dried out and I couldn't find the beak. Started to peel the shell off to see how it was positioned. All of a sudden it started to bleed (but not where I was working), so I stopped. I held it (still in its' shell) as it died. When I went to take the shell off (which was kind of stinky), I found something rather disturbing. What, pray tell, is this?! Is that the internal organs that developed on the outside? Is it a Siamese twin? A tumor?
like your 1 said up there its a yok sack that needs to be absorbed and this from my experience with incubaters happens when you open the incubater too much and the temperture goes haywire in the incubater
it's not the temp! mama get off their eggs often and some incubation sites even recommend a cooling down during the day...I don't.....but that baby has an infected yolk! bacteria must have gotten into the shell some way.....you never know with shipped eggs what the flocks health is like....if the eggs were washed etc.... I'm so sorry we've all been through these types of heartbreaks!!! :hugs
I second this! I open my incubator and pull out each and every chick as it hatches, which causes temp fluctuation and the humidity to lower a bit and then go back up, and that does not cause a yolk to turn green like that. It probably was that some bacteria got in. If the egg is washed before setting, it takes the bloom off and then bacteria can get in. Sometimes bacteria gets in anyway - that's what causes blood rings too.

I had a chick hatch alive with the same thing on the outside like that and it was its intestines if you look real close to the sack you'll be able to see all the little intestines inside. Of course they can't live like that and I had to put idown

:sick I thought it was just an infected yolk.

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking there was probably some microbial type thing because it was the only one that stunk. Good news is that thus far we've had 32 of the 36 due today hatch (the 4 silkies died.) I was able to save the 5 silkies that pipped at the wrong end. They are drying off right now.

I now have my Lavender, Black, Blue, Splash, Buff, and Chocolate Orpingtons (due to arrive tomorrow.) I also have a Blue Orpington/Splash Maran chicks, a Maran/EE chick, a couple Black Star, a RIR, and my daughter has her Silkie. I guess it wasn't such a bad hatch.

Now to withhold from hatching till February/March.

I have been so busy with starting college that I haven't been on much. I didn't realize how much I have missed! I love the updates on everyone's chicks! I will have to get some pictures of mine.

Here's an update on how my quail eggs are coming along.... I had a total of 30 shipped to me. I was able to place 26 in the bator. I candled them to double check everything and had lots of clears and quiters but luckly there were 14 wiggling little chicks inside those eggs. I'm on day 14 and about ready to head into lock down. I'm sooo excited!

Here's a pic of when I candled... I was getting pretty bummed seeing eggs that looked like this:
400
