November Hatch -- Who's going to have late fall babies?

Quote:
If they have pipped, then they should hatch within about 24 hours for that particular pipped egg.
Once they zip, it generally goes quickly... within about 20 to 30 minutes. you have enough eggs to where you will see some of them hatch, even if you don't catch the first one.
That's what I read and have experienced in my first hatch these last few days.
I still have one egg to go.
Congrats on your first hatch!

This hatch is not going as smoothly as my first. I have one pip right now, and for some reason the humidity dropped from 60sih to 45% while I was outside working. It was looking dry so I felt like I had to do *something* so I got two sponges wet in hot steamy water and stuffed them in real quick, and closed up the vent holes. The outdoor weather has been heck on this hatch, with the temps all over the place forcing me to switch from a/c to heat mid-incubation and that's what threw off my temp settings, and then right before hatch it got REALLY super humid outside so my humidity was great with one sponge, but now it's dropping and they are drying out......Such is Arkansas weather. At least we haven't had any tornadoes and the power has stayed on

Last time it got humid and warm during deer season my deer camp almost got blown away by a tornado

My first ever chick to hatch! We got to watch him/her. It is a buff rock x cuckoo marans (roo). I dunno if it's a girl or boy yet....

Here he/she is all fluffed out and in the brooder.

lNo wait, I see your Cuckoo was the ROO in that case no they are NOT sexlinked. FWIW most people list the sire first

I had Buff Orpingtons (roo) x Barred Rocks (hens) and they were black sexlinks - white heads = boys, dark heads = girls.
The only chick I have out is RIR x Cuckoo Marans (my NOT-feather footed one apparently) and he's a boy, whiteish head.
I love the dark legs on them though

ETA: So is it weird to be eating fried eggs while watching your eggs hatch??? LOL Mmmmmmm eggs cooked in my grandpa's old cast iron

My boss once asked me the difference between the eggs that I hatched and the eggs for eating, so trying to think of a simple-enough answer I told him "depends on if you put them in the refrigerator or not" he seemed satisfied with that answer. hehehe

and we have a second chick!!!!!!!!!!! This one is RIR x Barred Rock, and hatched out of a smallish pullet sized egg. Good thing I took the chance and incubated it! Go chicky!

that more hatch!

Wow - they are adorable!

Funny update on how my first time hatch is going:

I wrote about 11 days ago that my 7 month old little black hen (not sure what breed - she wasn't what I ordered) went broody. She has been doing great & had picked the barn cats igloo to lay in.

I was doing chores yesterday morning & when I peeked in to check on her, I saw that one of my Russian Spangled Orloff hens (she is the same age - they were raised together) was inside the igloo next to her! At first I panicked - thinking she was up to no good. I reached in & pulled her out & she immediately raced right back in there. It took me a while to realize that Lola wasn't even upset about her being in there - they were both making a soft little clucking noise - LOL!

I think the Orloff was getting ready to lay her first egg & she decided that was the place to go! I took her to the regular nest boxes and eventually she settled into one of them. However... I noticed that there was no new egg from her yesterday afternoon - so I have a hunch she probably snuck back in with Lola and laid it next to her & Lola happily tucked it underneath herself! I am going to have to put a little fence around Lola to keep the Orloff outta there tomorrow!!
