November Hatch -- Who's going to have late fall babies?

I also have Gabbard Farms eggs in two incubators. One went into lockdown last night... Let me check my records because I think some of the chicks in the brooders are some of Julie's eggs, too. (May take a day or two.... Got stuff going on right now.)

Gabbard is better than a hatchery and I've had good luck hatching her eggs she's very nice too. The Welsummers I hatched lay very dark eggs I bought Blue Coppers didn't hatch any blues but I got a Birchen and they lay nice dark eggs

thats good to hear. from what i could tell from the pics, she has much better than hatchery quality. Its always good to hear good feedback on someone you've done business with. hopefully, i'll have some chicks running around in three weeks and can justify ordering some more eggs. I know a good hatch is not guaranteed on shipped eggs but it would tell me a lot about how the postal system handles them between here and there. since she only a couple of states over, here's hoping.

I cracked the 6 remaining eggs today after lunch. Only one had internally pipped, although 4 were fully developed. Not sure what went wrong since they weren't shrinkwrapped and I didn't have any wild temperature changes. I bleached the 'bator and I have a doz more eggs ready to go for next month. Unfortunately the two that hatched are boys. Not really sure what I want to do with them

More'n likely they'll end up dinner in a while. I love hatching my own birds, but there are definitely some benefits to buying all pullets!!

Today while I was cooking for Thanksgiving, the power went out. I had a small cast iron skillet that had gotten warmed in the oven, so I wrapped it in a towel and put the 2 chicks in it in the brooder to keep them warm. They got in and out of it with ease when they wanted to be cooler or just peck around. Fortunately the power came back on pretty soon after.

We have some early bloomers! 12 mixed eggs are due tomorrow and they are already pipping!

We have 1 pip (pretty much a zip) and another pip!

I know that one is coming out of a silkie egg [dont know dad(4 possible dads)] and another is coming out of a light brown egg.

I had Thanksgiving babies hatch today...so far 2 EE's and 1 Lav. Orp!! I have also been hatching Brown Leghorn, Cuckoo Maran, Buff orps, BLRW's. I have more EE's and Lav. Orps due to hatch anytime, EE's again, Austrolorp, Buff Orp, Silkies, Lav/Lav Split silkies, Buff Brahma Bantams, Serama's. Having fun with the bator while i can... my girls are slowing down...BUT today one of my Buff Brahma bantams laid an egg....yeahhh!! Just keeping in mind... whatever pullets grow up from now till spring...and hopefully make it, could be laying this Spring or early Summer!! Would be nice if several of these chicks make it over winter.

Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Great way to be resourceful!
I noticed in your signature line that you have cuckoo marans and barred rocks. Have you had babies from the two (assuming you have a roo of one or the other)? I'm wondering because i would like to be able to sex my babies. Most of them have a white dot on their head of differing sizes. Is the bigger white dot the roo?
Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am hatching black sexlinks from them, using my RIR roo over the barred breed hens.
Of the two that hatched this weekend, I have one from the Cuckoo girls and one from my BR girl. Black sexlinks can be color sexed quite easily information here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261208

The
purebred Barred breeds can all be color sexed as well, it's fairly easy once you know what to look for. The males are more white looking with black bars, and the females are more black looking with white bars. Cuckoo Marans are overall darker and their barring is "messier" than Barred Rocks or Dominiques, but the light males/dark females still holds true. I do believe the bigger/messier white dot is a roo, but for me it's just easier to wait a week or so and compare their feather colors. hehehe

Cuckoo Marans chicks back row with their booties facing us ---- male, female, male, see the color difference? Easy to sex, to me anyway.
