I had 3 hatch last night, 2 Jersey Giants and a Cuckoo maran. One of my Production red's didn't make it. If I had been home I would have helped it. It was just goo huge to get out of the egg.

I still have several others in the hatcher. My first fertile silkie egg didn't hatch but it's still in the hatcher. I'll give it another day or two before I open it up to see if I can find out what went wrong. But I do have about 5 fertile eggs that come out on the 6th to go into the hatcher for lock down. Hopefully i'll get a chick.

These are from my eggs and they are first time layers. They have been laying for a month or two but haven't gotten any fertile till now. Apparently my roo is a slow learner. He's too busy being pretty I guess.

for chickies

OK, done with the 1st round. 9 of 14 cochins (9 went into lockdown) and 3 of 10 silkies (5 went into lock down). The silkers seemed to have a tougher time than the cochins. The cochins pipped, zipped and hatched without any messing around. Although I do have cochin 'Twinkles' with the toe problem; malpositined in the egg because the cord was wrapped around the ankle and the entire leg was twisted around. It's wearing a boot right now and getting around just fine. It was getting around fine before the boot too. The leg looks good but the foot is weird. Good thing they have feathered feet and are big fluff balls...might not ever notice the funky foot.

And those silkies....OMG, cuteness!

Next batch due this Saturday...thank you post office for complicating my life! (as if I can't do that well enough myself!)

If only I could get an incubator. I can but I have to save for it. Does anyone have any experience with the styrofoam incubators? Do they work okay?

We all probably have experience with them. I have 2 running as incubators and 1 as a hatcher. We have been slowly collecting the parts to make a cabinet bator. I'm hoping we'll have it up and running before spring.
