If you want to sell German Shepherd dogswithout AKC's and sell them to people here and there then that's fine and dandy. But if you want legitimacy if you want to command any type of price,or make sure that you are bringing to the hobby a good and healthy specimen,then paperwork and background is where its at.

As far as that dog in the picture?
I don't want to sound like a snob .I just think he's of poor quality; bad genetics. I'm sure he's a great dog but by the time those young pictures were taken ,you should be able see proper structure and I'm sorry that dog doesn't exhibit proper structure.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I'm not sure what structure you are looking for, but that dog is 8 years old now, and can still trot next to my horse or tractor for 4 hours, keep coyotes at bay all night and be fresh, happy and ready to do it again in the morning.

I'm sure you have your own standard for good genetics. That dog's eyes are clear, she has had her hips and elbows x-rayed and the vet who did it said he'd never seen a Shepherd as nice. She has no cancer, allergies or skin conditions, is tested clear of DM and heart conditions. Her teeth and gums are still clear and strong. But perhaps by good genetics you meant parentage? Her father was a show champion, her mother from a kennel that bred police dogs, grandfather was on the force. Now, plenty of GSD folks don't like a cross between show and working lines, so maybe it's that, but I'm pleased with her.

The AKC made a formal decision to "support and encourage commercial breeders". You live in Missouri, right?

That's what the AKC decided to support, because that's where the money is at. And plenty of good breeder protested, to which the AKC responded that they are not a regulatory body, just a show dog registry. And some breeders started to leave and use the UKS and breed clubs only instead.

Well, they couldn't lose that money now, could they?? So they decided to do a Limited Registration program, to "protect" dogs from ending up in puppy mills. And the show breeders cheered. Now, how easy would it have been for the AKC to show themselves to be a "show dog registry"? So easy! They could have limited registration for every dog that didn't have at least one parent with a title, even if it's nothing more than a Canine Good Citizen certification. That would have protected dogs - folks who buy breeding groups in lots at auctions sure aren't going through even that much trouble, right?

Right. And that was the problem. So they put it in the hands of the breeders, and INSTANTLY full registration became a pyramid scheme, passed from crony to crony. Magically, breeders who formerly raised dogs for years and competed with them to see their quality could now tell by 8 weeks which pups were good enough and, what do you know, any pup could be that pup if you were willing to slip over a few more bills or knew someone who knew someone. People being what they are and loving to form superior little groups of insiders, even over something as stupid as a piece of paper about a dog and now we actually have breeds going extinct because cronies didn't have enough cronies, but god forbid they loosen their grip. It's a rare Bernese that sees it's 7th birthday, genetic health and diversity across the board have taken a hard dive, I defy you to buy a Norwich Terrier that you could take and show in an AKC ring and I'm not supporting it.

And, I'm sorry, I don't want to sound like a snob, but this is really bothering me - do you actually want people to take breeding advice from someone who doesn't even know the name of the color? I mean, if someone can't be bothered to even know such an obvious and trivial thing

I'm a purebred and papered snob but I don't know squat about GSDs. I know I have friends that have nice GSDs. Came from good breeders, fully registered. I'd have never guessed that dog was a GSD. I'd have said mix. I guess that's probably due to puppy mill type breeding. They're after quantity afterall. Glad she (I think she? I didnt read everything) is a good dog.

As far as registries go, I will never support the ones that register just anything. That goes with both horse and dog registries. CKC, half breed registries, partial registries etc. Those are designed for backyard breeders and I will never support that.

It's your dog and you are it's master,to do with it as you wish. I threw my 2 cents in. That's all.

Your dog is over weight.
I'm going solely on the picture please keep in mind. A dog that is on a property working ,that is chasing out varmints Etc needs to stay slim. I would ration out that dog's food,feed it in the morning and done.

You should be able to see it's ribs a tad... the dog should not have any extra weight that will be a hindrance for it to move around when it wants to and should it needs to pour it on whether it's killing something running after something Etc extra fat will mean extra problems.
A farm dog that is as slick as a seal is not going to be optimal for work and for its own health.

Man ,a few years ago I met a gentleman that breeds Beagles 13 inch Beagles for hunting. He sells them exclusively for hunting but according to what he's telling me and he's shown me on his cell phone... pictures of them winning conformation shows... so you can have a working dog that will show well in conformation you just have to breed for it.
