Nutritional Dog Food

Quote:
I'm a Pet Nutrition Specialist for Nutro so I can tell you a bit about this. First, you want to avoid foods with ground yellow corn, or any kind of corn except corn gluten meal (gluten is the protein from grain.) Higher quality pet foods will use wheat, oatmeal, rice and/or brown rice as their grains because they are more digestible than corn. When the grain is more digestible your pet's body is able to use more of it, so there is less waste left in the yard, if you know what I mean. Also, some pets are sensitive to corn so it can cause problems with dry skin, flaking, itchiness, etc.

Of course I'm partial to Nutro and feed it to my dogs, but if you can't find it or whatever, just start reading those labels and look for a food that has a meat or a meat meal (preferably something that you can tell what it is, such as chicken, lamb, beef, etc. instead of mystery meat, lol) as it's first ingredient. If you see a food with corn or ground yellow corn as it's first ingredient, I'd put it back and keep looking.

Best wishes with this!

If you go to your PetsMart on either Saturday between 10-2 or Sunday between 2-6, chances are there will be a Nutro PNS in the store that can talk with you about your pets and your pets' specific needs, and can help choose which line and formulation would best suit your needs and budget.

Better yet, take your dogs with you if you can. We love to meet our customers' pets!
