NY chicken lover!!!!

Queen---it certainly looks like she should have right??? I hope it doesnt happen again because I dont think they are supposed to lay them that big!!!

Gave the terrorists and tiny tots some yogurt today. First time they had something other than chick food. At first the terrorists ran but then someone tried it (I had it on my fingers) and then they decided it was good. I had to put some on the sides of their box so the lowest ranking chicks could get some while the vicious raptors tried stripping off the flesh as well as the yogurt! Boy, some of them were quite fiesty too. Probably the boys in the bunch. I thought I was going to have a new nickname--stumpy! The tiny tots were much more gentle and only some of them ate the yogurt. Now everyone is resting.

Getting a nice, steady rain and I am hoping that it stays like this. The lawn and trees are just drinking all of this up and I swear my lawn has grown since this morning. A few days of this would be nice. I hope everyone else is getting some. I know the Ashokan reservoir is low and the feeder streams were dry so this is a much needed event. Of course I will have to hay my lawn when it is done but thats okay. The chickens will love all the new bugs and worms that are going to appear!

Stony--I have rir chicks in the brooder (the terrorists). How do you like them? They are so different from my br and glw girls. These chicks are lunatics when they are awake! Racing and flying and raising all kinds of ruckus! I am looking for good layers and eating chickens. All the boys but one or two are going to freezer camp.

I really like my RIR's. I have 7 from a farm that got out of chickens and 3 from blue Seal. Those are hatchery birds from PA. The farm raised birds are twice the size and lay eggs almost as big as my Pekin eggs. The farm raised girls are all 2 to 4 years old. All still lay at least every other day. The young girls lay really well. Most often 6 days a week.
I haven't eaten any of the reds as they are all hens. I have some tiny terrorists of my own. All are fathered by Sumatra's but the hens were RIR , White Leghorn, EE and Black Austrolop. The RIR and Austrolop mixes are just INSANE. And the RIR crosses are REALLY getting big fast.
If you want a lot of large to extra large brown eggs, RIR's are my personal favorite. Not the smartest birds ( I am comparing them to Sumatra's and Austrolops ) but are pretty mellow girls. Not in the least skidish. Pretty friendly as well.

I get those big eggs about once a month or so from my leghorns - they are SO huge from such a little hen! My last one was about 120gm, but I have a pic of a 111 one a few months ago. :)

I was at the Broome County 4-H tack sale. I was a horse member for many years (till I aged out) and still attend the tack sale every year. Seen a few grazing muzzles and actually looked at them, hoping new boy isn't a huge pig and requires one. Scored a used Weatherbetta turnout sheet and Weatherbeeta mid-weight winter blanket, both light purple, for him (I only blanket when it gets way below freezing or extremely windy). Tried them on quick tonight to make sure they fit before wrecking my washing machine with horse hair, both fit perfectly and he stood quietly. At least one thing went right today!

Lapeerian,
Went to a tack auction today too. Got a grazing muzzle. (Anyone need one? It is dusty, but brand new. PM me as I got a great deal on it and want to make a couple dollars and send it to a home where it is needed.) Also some safety reflectors for headband and legs, a brush, a christmas gift and two brass stall latches. Scored a saddle cover for my kids saddle too. Lots of rain here too and more to come tomorrow and tuesday. Lawn needs to be mown again.

I also find it frustrating to have a full schedule and then have it all mucked up.

Happy hatching to everyone. Broodies are lots of fun and soooo much less work than hatching and raising chicks.

Chickens are going through less feed now that they have part time access to the lawn through temporarty fencing.

Rancher: Hope you are feeling well as I haven't seen your posts lately.

Wow You guys get some large eggs. lol We get one every once in awhile but not in a long time. One of our hens had prolapse from laying large eggs but it healed thank the chicken gods.

I set 7 eggs another broody silkie on Thursday last week so here's to hoping this batch does as good as her sisters hatch.

I have had enough rain for now. Can the sun come back out tomorrow?

Betcher bottom dollar that tomorrow.....there'll be sunshine.....ooops, sorry, it will be more rain tomorrow, but maybe some sunshine tuesday afternoon or wednesday. Well, if we wait a few minutes it will be tomorrow and then we may truely see sunshine tomorrow. Is this confusing anyone else? Perhaps time for bed.

Egg salad for lunch tomorrow.

Hey guys, sorry to WAY off-topic here, but is anyone remotely around glens falls? I have a broody silkie hen on infertile eggs and it's about the time to give her chicks to raise - and suddenly no one has chicks! Does anyone around here have any they're selling?

Really sorry this is soooo off topic, but it's so odd - two weeks ago people were selling chicks around here left and right and now that I want some, nothing!

HI! I am very close to you. I may need chicks also LOL, as I have broodies sitting on questionable eggs and i want them off! :) . HOWEVER, I may have tons of chicks around the weekend if these eggs hatch so if you don't get any let me know - if I have extras you are welcome to them.

(If you find someone near us with babies hatching soon let me know too just in case :)).

I do have two week olds in the barn, but I think they'll be too old for ya.

Awesome :D Where are you located? I did find someone in Salem who is hatching easter eggers this weekend and is selling them for $2 each - they're listed on craigslist as ameracaunas but...I'm pretty sure they're easter eggers from hatchery stock parents. They're also selling older mixed breed chicks. But I'd love to get chicks from a fellow BYC'er instead.
