NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi!! I am new here, and am up in Carthage :)
We have 6 pullets from TSC, reds and yellows. We are new to raising chickens :)
Would love to meet someone who is near that could help me set up a great pen area for them?! I have a hutch that I am going to set up soon, and going to make a run for them, just looking for some guidance!! Thanks!!!

When making your run I hope you will think about Prediters they are a huge conscern wether it be the neighbors cat, Hawks or Coons etc.. And young chicks can get caught up and excape regular chicken wire.. Some people recommend something a little tighter like carpenters mesh ..Enjoy Your new Chickens .. I am Having my Husband build me a nice Coop right now, Hes on Vacation and I am very excited about it.

My neighbor is the local cat lady, so I am thinking of putting a roof over the coop to make sure nothing can get in! I will make sure to look into the carpenters mesh! Thanks! I am waiting for this snow to go away so I can get out there and get the area ready.

There is a nice Coop section at BYC but also all over the Web that maybe you can draw from what will fit your needs.. I have seen some clever and funny ideas that seem to work : )

Not your fault at all Tab. I was looking for feedback, good or bad, before I bought the chicks. I thank you for the insight that she bought/resold, which I don't have a problem with. My problem is the fact she was going to meet in the morning, around 10, and then calls me at 10:15, after I was already on the road to meet her. Took a 40 minute trip around the countryside (to get from tack sale to meeting place) for something that would have been 10 minute to get home. With gas at $4 a gallon, it really irks me. And every time I think I have a lead on some more chicks, something goes wrong, which is discouraging.

So since I'm not getting the extra chicks I had hoped for, anyone close by got chicks available? I see on CL that someone had Iowa Blue, 14 chicks for $25, about 25 mins from my house. Anyone have experience with this breed? This is not one that I had come across before. I'll keep checking CL. Or make a trip to visit Tab & Trav. :)

We have to come down again at some point to pick up our pork from Trav's parents. I don't know anything about Iowa blue, google it?

Wow You guys get some large eggs. lol We get one every once in awhile but not in a long time. One of our hens had prolapse from laying large eggs but it healed thank the chicken gods.

I set 7 eggs another broody silkie on Thursday last week so here's to hoping this batch does as good as her sisters hatch.

I have had enough rain for now. Can the sun come back out tomorrow?

Yes !!!!! Sun...we planted grass seed in the backyard and watered last week..I now think it is all washed away..even with mulch on it!!!

We too get some huge eggs..scarey big!
Good luck on the broody!
