NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a question about feed. I would look it up but it might just be easier to get an answer here...

I have a flock of 9 4 month layers who have started laying and are getting layer feed.

I also have 7 new chickens that are about 2 months old that I would like to integrate into the older flock. What do you feed a flock with different aged birds? Can I still give the layers the flock raiser/grower?

I have a terrible case of morehens disease. The chickens were hubby's idea. Now the coop is mine, dh doesn't step foot in it unless I need his help with something. We started with a purchase of 6 chicks, and now I have a flock of 22 mixed chickens (only 1 roo, I think) and now just got 18 BA chicks for breeding next year. I plan on selling 1 day old chicks along with eggs from all the chickens. Love my new hobby!

You can usually find me somewhere in the coop or run! lol
BA-- blue ameracauna? If so I'm curious about where you got them. DH has been looking for them, but not hatchery. My brother lives in Rochester so we drive through your neck of the woods a couple times a year. Next time is in September.

I have mixed birds, chicks, pullets, older layers, roosters. EVERYONE gets chick starter/grower (or flock raiser equivalent) and I just keep oyster shell on the side for the layers.

I do the same thing. If you are not laying, chick starter.

Add me to the "grower/raiser" group with oyster shell on the side for the layers. I actually had almost 2 months with straight layer in one side of my coop. WOOHOO!!! Now I will be back to grower/raiser after the bag of chick feed is gone. sigh. BUT the good side is, I can buy just about anything they have in stock and have a use for it.!!!

First day back at work and of course it was a freak show. Lots of screaming kids in the store today. Why do parents let them do that? If I had tried that crap my mother would have given me something to scream and cry about! And why do parents feel the need to "make a deal" with their 3 year old that "if they stop crying right now they can have a toy." Whatever happened to just leaving the store and going home if they arent behaving? Sorry...didnt mean to vent but it really burns me to see that.

Seems all was well while I was gone. Had to bust the broodie silkies out of their spots in the run, with much shrieking and screaming and carrying on. Man are they little witches this time around. I dont yell at Little Man for coming over and attacking the shrub rake I was using to move them because he was only doing his job in response to the girls. If it wasnt so hot, I would lock the wenches in the coop and let him and stripe have the run to themselves. Its going to be a long august.

The terrorist boys may be going to camp sooner rather than later. 5 of them were after the same poor girl and forcing her to mate repeatedly. I made dh go after them to leave her alone. Poor thing just lay on the ground trying not to move in hopes they would leave. When she finally got up and ran, they all went after her again. dh did manage to get in a few good kicks and swats. If I had space and building available, I would lock up all the boys away from the girls until processing time.

Stay cool everyone.

Hey guys, I'm considering ordering from Meyer Hatchery. Now, the minimum order to my area is 4 large fowl chicks, 6 bantam chicks, or 5 in a mixed order. I'm ordering because I want a sultan or two. Sooo, the question is - does anyone around glens falls want to split the order? Or farther out, if you want to drive over and meet me somewhere. I'm looking to get in on the August sixth or August 20th ship dates, if I do order, so that might limit you a bit. All I ask is that you pay for the chick(s) that you want and that you split shipping with me. I'm not gonna order if we don't get enough people to reach the order minimum, though. Although I figure five or six chicks probably won't be a stretch to get. Go ahead and send me a pm if you're interested :) The more people we get, the less it will cost us all! The august 20th ship date is gonna work best for me, but if you have a breed that will only ship on the sixth, I'll see what I can do.

Alrighty guys, last call. I think I have enough people ordering to fill minimum order, and I might order tonight. Anyone else who wants some speak up now!

I don't blame you, I would have been dragged out of the store and it wouldn't have been good. The problem is people are too afraid to discipline their kids anymore.

Thanks for the fast replies!! I will finish off my layer feed and grab another bag of flock raiser. A bit of a pain since I have a bunch of layer feed but so be it...

You can resume feeding the layer feed you have in stock when the younger birds are 16 weeks. About 2 months from now, so it won't go to waste. Just be sure to reseal the bags with duct tape if they are already open and store them away from mice/rats even if they are not open.
