NY chicken lover!!!!

About the poorly behaved kids, they are being trained to behave that way. If the parents wanted them to be well behaved they would have the talk outside before they came in and the reward would be mentioned at that time but not given UNLESS the child meets the requirements. It's not rocket science, it's a bit like training a dog in this aspect. If you reward bad behavior then you will get more of the same. Short term vs long term.

Guess you struck a chord. :)

You can resume feeding the layer feed you have in stock when the younger birds are 16 weeks. About 2 months from now, so it won't go to waste. Just be sure to reseal the bags with duct tape if they are already open and store them away from mice/rats even if they are not open.
I have one coop on layer feed since they are all 16 weeks - a good way for me to use up those last few bags. =) Plus a bunch of my chickens in my mixed age coops have started molting so the extra protein in the starter will be useful.

Hey Cass, the little lavender chicks from your eggs are sooo cute.. I think I have all boy chicks tho except for the one naked neck.. I *think* my NN is a girl.. but the two lavender chicks and the black ones are already starting to pink up a little. Just my luck, I keep 5 chicks and four are boys...

Pyxis has the rest of the chicks from the hatch, hopefully she is having better luck. :)

The few california white eggs I managed to salvage from the smashed shipment o' eggs are in lockdown today. Don't have much hope - very deformed aircells and some are patched up with wax. But worth a shot, for the money I paid for the eggs would like a few chicks to give to my broodies.

Hello Everyone!

Another hot one today, can't wait for this cooler weather to come. Let the chickens out early this morning and they're already in their "spot" in the woods by the creek. They'll spend most of the day there or under my side porch where it's nice and cool. No eggs yet. The two older ones will be 20wks by next Friday, so I'm guessing I probably wont find any for a couple of more weeks.

My raccoon has officially given up. Haven't seen any traces of him around my coop since I placed the cement blocks down around the run where he was digging and also no traces of him trying to get into my garbage anymore. Maybe he got hit by a car because this is just too good to be true. LOL I thought I'd be dealing with predators all summer but he was the only one I had so far and apparently he's gone!

Well I'm of to Lowes to get some landscaping stones. I'm all done with the digging in my yard which means I've run out of all the large stones/rocks I was digging up. I did see someone post on CL an ad for landscaping stones that looked like they were from his own yard and he was trying to sell for $95. Thought that was a bit much for stones HE didn't even pay for. I'll pay a quarter of that price at Lowes on the aount I need to finish up my yard.

Stay cool today and drink lot of water!! ;-)

I need to get gravel.. was thinking of having some delivered.. We are digging up two old cracked concrete porches (they were cracked and heaving because they were improperly done) so now we need to get gravel/stones. Was going to go to lowes, but we'd need a lot of bags and I'm thinking it would be cheaper to get it delivered.. Anyone get rock/sand delivery that has a recommendation? Of course, I am not really near any of you but hey worth a shot..

We also need to clean the gutters.. there's grass growing out of them.. :p :p

My chickens are already under 'their' tree, all dug in. So nice to be able to let them out again.

If you need to buy in bulk I would say your best bet would be to have it delivered. I actually ended up going with these cedar log posts to line my bed with in the front of my house. Went to Lowes and they had the whole stone area blcoked off for whatever it was they were doing - adding/removing to their stock I guess. I am officially done with all of my planting! The house looks so much better and I can finally relax and enjoy it...along with a much needed drink. These kids are driving me crazy! LOL

FYI - I know alot of you will make your own brooders but for anyone looking I was just looking thru the Pets section of Syracuse CL ad came across this "Turtle House". Looks like something that would make a great brooder for someone with a large amount of chicks.

Here's one for a little bit cheaper

Heavens to Betsy, I can't keep up with all these posts. I'd never get anything done and I don't read that fast.

I hope everyone is doing ok in this heat. Takes me longer and longer to water the garden and the chickens.

take care and I'll try to catch up on some of what's going on. If I could get you all to move to the neighborhood i wouldn't have such a hard time.
