What part of CT did you visit? I'm orginally from there, moved 5 year ago to Albany and this this year to Syracuse.

Well, I was going to bring the kids to Tim's Pumpkin Patch today...got all the way out there, not only was it PACKED but I totally forgot it rained last night. There was mud everywhere! I see all these people walking around in there rain boots and decided no way are we tackling this with crocs and sneakers on! So I decided to head out to Michaels and Target, since I was going to have the kids decorate their pumpkins with paint, stickers and whatever else they wanted, and then try to find rain boots at Target - well that would have ended up costing me close to $100 for the three of us, just for boots! Ridiculous...As much as I'd like some rain boots for doing all my chores outside the house, I was not up for spending a hundred bucks just so we can grab pick pumpkins. Went to Navarino Orchards instead, got a bag of apples and 6 pumpkins and came home.

Sad thing is, we brought home cupcake mix and I have no large eggs because Orps haven't been laying. Going to have to buy some from my neighbor as I see she now has a large sign out front and is selling them. Funny cuz I was just saying how I wondered what she's been doing with all her eggs. I'm sure she'll refuse any money from me, but I'll make her take it.

I would use my silkie eggs but I'm unsure as to how many to subsitute for 3 large white eggs.

Thank you all for your support. It means a lot to me and mine. Taking it one day at a time.

Lynzi--2 silkie eggs equals 1 large egg.

Tab--3 is a unique number. I have 3 girls and they are all 2 years apart. They kept me busy and keep me company now. Whatever you decide, enjoy every moment as it passes quickly.

My cheeps were entertaining the neighbors today. She was telling me all about their antics so she had an enjoyable afternoon. Girls are still laying like gangbusters. I wish they would eat all the nasty stinkbugs around here. I was hoping for some sun to dry things up so I can rake and bag pine needles and leaves. Hopefully soon.

My best friend lives in Milford, she moved from Bloomfield. We ended up spending the night at Foxwoods after playing bingo etc.

So I was unpacking the chickie food and pouring it into a large pet food container ....filled the feeder...checked the plugs and plugged inan extension cord for the ecoglow. I'm waiting to fill the water until I get the call from the post office. With this chilly weather I'm afraid for the little ones. So any last minute advise? I joked with my girlfriends that this was my last BC weekend, then laughed at my own joke because I had to explain to them BC meant before chickens....they understand that I have completely lost my mind :) thankfully they still love me..I hope....

Michaels had an awesome sale on recipe card boxes and notepads with chickens on them...I got four recipe card boxes I plan on making some cute egg recipes on. I figure they could be cute gifts with a dozen fresh eggs. The boxes are only fifty cents.

Gardening and cooking are my first and second loves...so chickens just feel right.

{{{{{Amy}}}}} Sorry for your loss. They are such parts of our families.

I've had a rough couple days. We rented out our old house for the last 10 years to the same family. We always knew they were trash, just bit our tongues because they paid their rent every month with no problems. Several months ago they suddenly stopped paying. We put notice on the door (legal mumbo jumbo... pay in 3 days or face eviction). Thankfully, they moved out immediately. We took possession this morning.
I knew they were trash, but this was disgraceful! The house is an absolute pigsty. Carpets will all need replacing. But the worst part... there was a leak in the roof that we were told today started many MONTHS ago. Now, if you're renting, and there's a leak, wouldn't you call the landlord? Not these idiots. The roof and ceiling inside actually collapsed and there is mold growing on top of mold growing on top of mold. There is so much water damage that the floors squish up black water when you walk on them.
SERIOUSLY??? Thousands of dollars in damage. PIGS. That's all I have to say.

That is sad! We are still landlords because we could not sell our house in town...we live 20 miles away...we hate being landlords...we have been off and on for 20 years and cant wait until that house is finally gone! The Lord must be looking out for us because we have a great family in it now...They have updated the house better than we did! But..weve had our pigs too;( Im sorry....you can sue them but it would be like milking blood from a dried up turnip..

My husband and I have rental property also and we can also say the same thing about the tenants. "Pigs but they pay on time" I just hope in a few years that we aren't saying the same thing about the leak. Sorry to hear of your troubles.

What a nightmare! Sorry for all the trouble they have caused you. Funny cuz we rent and with this being our first house that we are renting, I always wondered how people do it - rent out a house that they used to own or have remodeled to turn into a rent. I am such a neat freak and so anal when it comes to organization or just the "keeping" of things. When we inquired about living here, we wanted this house so bad, I felt like I needed to stress how we would "treat this home like it were our own" but really that can mean anything if you don't know a person. My husband just said, don't go overboard, just let it be and whatevers meant to be will be...We obviously got the house, but just the smallest things sometimes I'll call the owner and ask what he'd like us to do about it, because I don't want to be that person. If there's an issue I notify him and let him know how we took care of it or ask him how he'd like us to go about it. It amazes me how ungrateful people are and how they don't have the respect for other people's property. And now, because of something like this you'll probably be hesitant as to who to rent out to next.

Regarding the silkie eggs - you think this is an ok rule to follow (2 silkie eggs equal 1 large egg) if you're silkies lay two different size eggs? Tab's Silkie lays a much smaller egg than my daughter's silkie, who a bit larger than her. Maybe I'll just stick to pearl's eggs, however I don't even have 6 from her yet if I did want to bake for my kids tomorrow. But I will definitely keep that in mind for next time. Think I'll grab some from my neighbor anyway tomorrow just to have in the fridge. Ugh, why aren't my orps laying anymore?!? Nothing changed but the weather, will they not lay all winter now?

Oh, I am sorry that you are going through that. My husband and I had rentals also and finally we just couldn't take it anymore, people are pigs and they just trash nice places. We sold our rental when the market was still good and we were so glad to be rid of it.

Ok, I have a question, do you guys ever have problems with squirrels getting into the chicken runs? Will squirrels fiddle with the eggs? Our run is made of welded wire and they are just slipping right through going for the feed. The dopey chickens just sit just sit there, look at them, and let them eat all of their food. Even the rooster! At least when I had the RIR hen, she didn't like any critter in the runs and would chase them off immediately. Should I pull out the BB Gun and pepper them a bit?
