NY chicken lover!!!!

Just let me know when your ready. They should be ready around January and I will hatch and sell eggs until May. By that time they will be broody. Around June or July I will have started birds reafy. :)

Went to my second horse lesson today, Sunday I'm going back to ride!! I'm so excited! Hopefully by Spring I can convince DH to let me splurge on a horse of my own! It would be nice to be able to work with my own rather than a different horse every time I'm there.

Came home to an egg in the orps next box - 99% sure its the one I get a week from my lavender hen. Did some looking around, can't find any eggs anywhere else.

While it sounds really good to have a horse of your own, you could out grow it really fast. Keep taking lessons on different horses because you never really know a horse until you get it home. Also, consider a lease or half lease. There is nothing more heartbreakeing that getting a horse, riding for 6 months and realizing that this IS NOT THE HORSE FOR YOU!!! Trust me, I have 3 and once they are here, they don't leave(ALIVE, I keep them until they are old and decrepit!! :)). It is very expensive to keep a horse, not to mention that horses do not usually do well by themselves so always think 2 horses. I know that it is really exciting to get a horse of your own. Go to a local stable and try and get a 1/2 lease. Grow!! become a better rider and become better at horsemanship. Then buy a horse!!! ALSO remember to have fun!!!!!!

When we moved here, the previous owners had a horse - I wanted to keep that horse (and they wanted us to), but hubby said no way.. Now that I know how expensive they are, I'm kinda glad I didn't keep the horse. My boss keeps telling stories about the vet bills that make me cringe..

And the Vet bills are just the start of it. There is the blacksmith, hay, grain, and other treats and the wormer. And you think you break your back carrying water for chickens? Horses drink more in a day then the chickens do all week.

I still want a miniature cow tho. They are soooo cute.

When my lessons are up with the woman I'm taking them from, I plan on asking her if she would lease out one of her horses, since she is the closest to me. I'd rather do that before buying one. I've already worked with 3 of her horses and they're all pretty laid back. She did mention to me how a family relative started leasing one out and hasn't been to her house in the past month and a half and hasn't paid her either. So something may work out there - like if this person doesn't want to give up the full lease, maybe she'll do a half lease with me.

As far as boarding I've already been offered my neighbor's pasture across the street. She has over 20 acres that just the one horse from the woman down the road is staying. She said he would probably love a pasture mate. I'm not looking to buy tomorrow, and like you mention it may not be for me - but I can say this. I have wanted a horse ALL my life! Growing up, my family never had money for me to take lessons and get into any kind of horseback riding weekly or even every other week. Now that we are finally living in an area where all these horses are right at my finger tips, I am finally getting into it because I can. I have the time, I have the money, I have the space, I feel like if I don't do it now, I'll give up on this dream I've had my whole life and never do it. But I do appreciate all the feedback! Its nice hearing things from a different point of view to sort of keep me in my place and just remind me of what I'm getting myself into.

Cass, a miniature cow??? I never knew there was such a thing. Really?

My peeps have been (knock on wood) consistantly laying 12 to 14 eggs per day. I gave them the wormer yesterday and it has a 14 day withdrawal period. Don't you know, they produced 15 eggs today? A record. Sigh... It broke my heart to throw away those eggs.
We needed the space in our garage, so I moved half a leftover bale of straw into the coop in a corner. They decided it was the premier place to lay eggs and made a nest on the top of the straw. They laid TEN eggs in the one nest today. LOL Guess I'll have to add a box in that spot.

Another update on the rented house. (Dh and I will not set foot in the house. Our new renter is taking care of the mess, thank God!) They were cleaning heat vents today and discovered MAGGOTS in the heat ducts. How the he** do you get MAGGOTS in the heat ducts?
