NY chicken lover!!!!

I know Silkies have bird brains, but they must have numb butts too....my momma silkie sat on one of her babies and killed it. AND she ignored one that fell out of the nest box and I don't think it's going to thaw again and live. (I thawed it myself yesterday and it is cold and just barely moving again today)

I think I am going to make some notes to myself regarding this particular hen and take her first hatched until she leaves the rest of the eggs and return them at that point. Cuz she's DUMB. And this isn't the first time she has done this. (I just forgot her MO until I saw it again this time) I also think I am going to put her in a dish pan (instead of a nest box) next time she goes boody so her chicks can't fall out without learning to fly first.

Edited to add: The chick thawed out under the momma and is moving, cheeping and acting normal. If it survives it's name is "Miracle"
They are sooo dumb, bless their little chickens hearts. I am sorry that your chickie passed and hope for the best for the other little guy. I have a black show silkie and she is gorgeous....and a real dumdum. She is annoying, she won't get out of the coop or in the coop by herself...she has a hard time finding the food and the water. I taped up her crest to see if she just can't see....but nope, just a dumdum.

Here's my little broody - she's the one that I had sitting on six chicks, then I stupidly gave four away - but you can see now just why - that's two, two week old chicks under there. LOL. =)

But she managed to get them on the roost, 5 feet up!

I have learned that most folks don't know much about chickens. For them they come in two colors , white and red. Which is why most folks order leghorns and RIR's the first time out. Many don't research them before hand. IMO.
Non chicken people don't really care either. Unless it's their interest they couldn't care less about learning.
I've had to explain about stress and feed and many other things. They only know what they see on TV and in movies. But the same goes for other animals too. Except of course Dogs and Cats. Lord have mercy people spend millions on cats and dogs and IMO get little of value out of them.
To many people aren't animal lovers. This is why the shelters are full. Attending a large church I've put a few people in their place about the welfare of animals. FYI The bible does not teach that we can do whatever we want with animals! I'll stop there.

So what to do? Educate anyone who will listen for two minutes. If you have customers give them literature with their first order of eggs. I high light the important stuff. I go to the UPS store for cheaper copies. I now have about 4 or 5 pages from different sources.

Take care and be well,

Rancher soon to be in AL Hicks (by the grace of God)

I've lost a few chicks to them falling out of the nest and not being able to get back in. Now I try to put them in a shallow nest so any who do get out can get back in. I have read to take the first few chicks and wait til the others finish, but don't have time to mess around. If I've set them all on the same day they should all hatch on time. If not within a day or two I just toss the unhatched ones. Momma knows which eggs are good or not. I've candled and yet to find any that were good when she's gotten up and left with the chicks.

In fact I recently lost a chick that is older. Don't know where it wandered off to. They've been wandering far from the coop with the mothers. They're plenty old enough. I figure it got lost and couldn't find it's way back. I called and called but no luck. I discovered it gone this am but it may have disappeared yesterday. I don't poke around to count them at night. They're under the hen or hens, depending on whether both want to cover them.

This rain is making me miserable and tired! Why couldn't we get any of this weather during summer this year?!? I'm going riding on Friday again, hopefully the weather is nice and I have a horse that wants to MOVE! LOL

Every few weeks I have to work on "go forward " with one of my horses!! He is so lazy and he has made it HIS life's ambition to make ME work as hard as possible!! He has this uncanny ability to draw me into "I can't possibly go forward without YOU using your leg ALL THE TIME!!!" and I get so drawn into it!!! He so has my number.....
