Corn has more carbs, so would have more calories. . Corn is used as filler in a lot of animal feeds to add carbs, but has fewer good nutrients. My birds are in good weight, so I don't worry that much about the cold. Corn used to be cheaper than oats, but not any more. I get more bang for the buck with the oats. I fear corn adds more fat than nutrition so I try to stay away from it. But that is my personal opinnion.
In volume I get more oats than corn, so I would expect, that it would be a wash, but since I don't know, I do throw them some corn when its coldest. And they think its great!

I had been thinking about switching to back to oats anyway. I always have organic layer pellets as their mainstay. Corn is the first ingredient so I didn't want to over do the corn, but as a newbie I was not sure what to do. I fed whole oats as scratch during the summer and they loved them and I was thinking about switching back to oats anyway. Using some as scratch and trying to sprout some for greens. Have you ever supplemented with a fat (suet) on the coldest of days?
Thanks ,
Ginny

I'm just sprouting oats now. Its been 2 days and I can see them starting. I'm excited about it because its suppposed to be more nutritions for then than just eating dry oats.
I give them food fat scraps, but I don't "buy" suet for them.

I have birds inside the barn, and 7 coops attached to the outside of the barn, so they are pretty well protected. I have more frequent things occur when the weather is wet & damp. I hate spring & fall during the mud season, the birds that have outside run just bring the wet inside the coops and the bedding stays wet. I do have my coops floor lined with 4" rubber mats that are used for cows. That helps insulate them from the cold ground and keeps them dryer. Last week the runs were under water when it rained so much, but the coop floors stayed dry as long as I locked the birds inside.

We feed Blue Seal grower pellets. For a treat we give them a hand full daily of Scratch Grain.
I do give them a little brown cooked rice when we have it. And of course leaf lettuce or any greens (not iceberg lettuce).

They have a covered run. The ground is pebbles with dirt under. They love to scratch in it.

We have an automatic door and at dusk the chickens are in the Barn and the metal door is closed.
Keep the other animals out. They are safe.

For water we have a 3 gallon heated special unit from Tractor Supply. We do have electric
in our barn. The 13 Silkies give us 6 to 10 eggs daily....we think they deserve a cozy home.

Greetings from the most Southern tip of our lovely NYS!
I had to recently downsize due to a move. Living in Staten Island NY, one of the 5 boroughs of NYC, I was hard pressed to re-home my small flock because I did not know that I'd have the facilities to house them quickly.Golden Sebright and a splash sizzle living in a little comfy shed for the time being.
Well I am now in my dream house on 1/2 acre with fabulous neighbors and a wooded/sunny parcel. And only 2 little banty girls. My incubators are ready to go in the next month or 2 and hopefully I can find some eggs close by from my fellow NY'ers to hatch out.
Millie Fleur cochins are 1 st on my list. As well as some silkies as I miss mine a lot.
I have some larger fowl lined up,Coronation Sussex and cochins.... but wondered what else might be found close by for fast easy shipping of either eggs or peeps. Let me know what ya got!
Best wishes,
Maggie

I found someone in Canastota that will be processing poultry, but they might not be able to do any before Christmas due to the cold weather.

I'm looking for a back up in Central,NY....within a radius of 20 miles of UTica, Oneida,. I've been raising a turkey for Christmas dinner, and don't want to end up buying one....

Does anyone know of any other processors?

Please tell me who it is. I've been looking for someone. There seem to be a lot of people who need someone. I would consider it myself if I knew how and had a set up. Having a set up is half the battle it seems to me. I even saw a plucker for about $400.

If anyone wants his name & number, I will email it privately.

My girls have finally decided to go on strike this past week, down to 1 or 2 a day from a dozen a day. I wanted to start the incubator for christmas, but so far only have 2 EE eggs I want to put in. How is everyone else's birds doing? Does anyone have any SLW(any wyandotte would do), blue orpington, or americauna eggs they'd be willing to part with? I figured if I could get a few eggs here or there I would end up with enough to run the incubator. I'm itching to run the new HovaBator that came this week (Merry Christmas to myself!)

Rudy and Karen Brouillette (Knoxboro) have Silver Laced Wyandottes. PM me if you want their number...I was just there on Saturday to pick up some White Leghorns.
