NY chicken lover!!!!

Tab's chicken obsession :

My girls have finally decided to go on strike this past week, down to 1 or 2 a day from a dozen a day. I wanted to start the incubator for christmas, but so far only have 2 EE eggs I want to put in. How is everyone else's birds doing? Does anyone have any SLW(any wyandotte would do), blue orpington, or americauna eggs they'd be willing to part with? I figured if I could get a few eggs here or there I would end up with enough to run the incubator. I'm itching to run the new HovaBator that came this week (Merry Christmas to myself!)

The best slw are from Rick Hare near Buffalo.

If I had seen his birds before I started with the blrws, I would have bought his.

He is an APA judge and I've never been to a show that one of his birds didn't win BIS, or RBIS. His slw are the best.

About 3 years ago I asked him what a trio cost and it was $75. So I don't know how much they are now, but if you show, they are worth it.

Rudy and Karen Brouillette (Knoxboro) have Silver Laced Wyandottes. PM me if you want their number...I was just there on Saturday to pick up some White Leghorns.

If this is the same Rudy who was at the ALBC conference I have a pair of his Btm rosecomb brown leghorns. They are nice birds and quite honestly you wouldn't expect them to lay a decent sized egg but they do. They roos a biter but I don't spend a great deal of time with the chickens in the winter. Mostly just go to feed and water and collect eggs. Yesterday DD did everything except the water.

I am hatching some of those Bantam eggs if anyone is interested. They are an auto sex breed btw. I never got any cuz I read they are flighty and not much good for meat. Muggsy, I've got hatching eggs to, EE's and Dels and Crosses which may have some friz in them. $2 doz just like for eating. Your $2 is donated to the orphanage in India through my church. The Living Word, you can see information on the orphanage on line at livingword.org I believe.

Well gotta move to Coffee's ready

MY husband and I called them this weekend, but didn't get a hold of them. We'll have to try again. I was looking to get SLW because the 2 hens we had died. Thank You.

Keep trying. They sure are busy doing authentic farming compared to my backyard wannabe farming.

Thanks Rancher. My flock had a nasty run with cocci and a respiratory thing in Oct. I would definitely be interested later for hatching eggs...I will never introduce another adult bird into my flock again. I'll keep your Delawares in mind. I have a friend (well, of a friend of a friend...) who has Delawares that are laying pinkish-purpley eggs. As I am after egg color primarily, I REALLY want to get my hands on those. If your Delaware girls are laying pinkish-purpley eggs, I sure would be interested! And good for you and your church for doing something to help others. I'd be happy to send some money to your church's cause...we don't have a lot, but every bit helps. PM me with an address.

Also, I've heard nothing but how tiny these leghorns are and the size egg they lay!

Rudy has some nice looking Buff Leghorns I had my eye on (the White Leghorns will be the first white layer I've bought)....oh, and some of their CUTE lil Lavender OEGB's. I need to reign myself in.

Well now my girls do lay purple spotted eggs or at least one of them does. The non hatchery girls anyhow. I've got a hatchery girl who lays a pink egg. While I am selective when hatching, I preferr the non hatchery girls and of course Nick who is a very nice roo. Friendly and easy on the girls. Some lay a dark spotted egg on occasion.
The friz's would be a CM/red bantam friz cross, She's cuckoo patterned crossed with a del roo. I do have a lav amer. roo so he might be the dad of hers, but the dels are pure I don't hatch crosses with other breeds I have. The dels are seperate with a couple of EE's that are fond of Nick the Del roo and won't leave him willingly. Of course their eggs are easy to tell from the Dels.

As for the church thing, I wasn't looking for donations I just thought I'd charge the same for hatching as I do for the customer who eat the eggs. At least to neighbors like you. It's just something l like to do.

Of course the leghorns aren't my favorite but they are ok. I had them posted on CL but got no takers. So I thought why not hatch some eggs, but I didn't put to many in this batch. If I keep them I'd just add another coop and a few more hens. Of course it 's the roosters who are the pretty ones. They are up for sale or trade, but if they don't go I guess I'll have to keep them.

by the way, I run a closed flock. No new birds unless I am sure about them. The leghorns are still by themselves.

Well take care folks

Well Lord have mercy, my DD lived in Lockport just down the road from Smith's auto and Andersons. She moved to TX for a teaching job. Two weeks before school started Buffalo called her to offer her a job. I was so mad at NYS, we miss them real bad. Always hated Transit Rd, and got lost trying find the exit for Buff State.

Got my Dels from WNY, best layers I got.

Making homemade saurkraut tonight and my chickens are going to love me tomorrow when they get all the cabbage scraps. DH isn't going to like the smell when it starts to cure, but the finished product is much better than the store stuff.

DW makes a saurkraut thing called Ka puusta, not sure how it's spelled and she makes Perogi, but I only like the potato ones. It's part of our traditional Polish Christmas eve dinner. I'm Irish but I ate it to please the in- laws. They're dead so now I don't have to. We have Fried fish , Ka puusta, perogi, and potatoes. Very heavy food. We start by breaking bread. The oldest passes the bread or wafer to the next oldest, says a blessing and so on until each person is given a piece of bread or wafer and a blessing,
Then the next oldest does the same until everyone has a piece of bread or wafer from each person and then we eat it and then have dinner. Does that make sense?

My father in law was from Poland and my mother in law's parents were from Poland. I'm not sure where the tradition came from. We try to maintain it. Though it has not religeous signfincance that I know of.

I hope your saurkraut comes out good.
