NY chicken lover!!!!

Didnt get as much as you sundown but man, was it freezing out to shovel! Gave the girls some warm oatmeal with molasses. Much appreciated on their part. Left them locked in as they ran for the other end of the tractor when the door was opened to check on them and feed them. Wind is still roaring through so it is probably for the best. I will probably try to clear the run some tomorrow. Its a portable one so it is open to the elements. Girls dont mind going out when it isnt so windy. I am hoping for a permanent coop and run this spring as I want to raise Javas. Today is a good day to stay in and read!

Well......... our cars are under snow and the drifting is 5" high in my yard. I don't know officially how much staten island got but we must be in some state of emergency as the rails...ferry...busses aren't running. Streets I can see from my windows are near impassable evn having been plowed numerous times.. I can't remember a time like this. Hope it5 is just my block and not everywhere!

Oh wow Maggie! That's incredible. For the first time this year (it seems) we didn't get any snow from this recent storm. We've been hit with every other one though. If we got a dusting this time, I can't tell.

If your in zone 5 or below, what are your favorite things to plant in your vegetable garden? If you have one of course. Do you plant heirlooms? Do you start your own plants from seed? Please list "variety".

I start everything inside in early April. Flowers I start even earlier...like late February. I am transitioning to heirlooms. I direct sow corm, squashes and plant my started plants on memorial day. Last year I put a window on some hay bales and started swiss chard and carrots directly in the garden. Swiss chard did awesome all year. The carrots took a month to germinate but did well. Potatoes and onions I try to get in the first week of may. I have never had any luck with melons though I try every year.

We've been doing a little bit of everything. We have excellent luck with our onions and potatoes and collard greens, lettuces. I can't seem to grow tomatoes, though (beige thumb). This year we will be focusing on heirloom varieties. We couldn't use the seeds from this past year because the dog we tried rescuing decided to pee all over the box w/ the seeds in them. Even though they were in plastic...I wasn't going to rinse them off.

I feel we will be fine starting from scratch.

Something we have had really good luck with...thornless blackberries and tayberries. The plants went crazy last year.

I got some partridge bantam Wyandottes from Rudy last year for my Grandson to show, I hope you get a bunch and can show them as well. I just put a few of their eggs in the incubator just for the fun of it, I really don't have rooom for banties!

Sue

Sue, who did you sell your Wheaten Marans chickens to again? I would like to find someone here in NY to buy a roo off of, or at least some hatching eggs.

So I guess I have to shovel out the run. My darling divas stood at the pop door and looked out then turned and bawked at me that there was no way their dainty little feet were going anywhere near that nasty white stuff on the ground. One poor brave girl tried to fly out under the tractor and ended up perching on the water bowl underneath. She wouldnt move even when it was time to be locked up so I had to open the skirt, reach underneath and grab her then yank her out through the small opening. She was not a happy girl but after being held and petted for a bit, she was appreciative of being placed back in the warm tractor. Now all this snow is supposed to melt by the weekend which means their run will be muddy! The things this chicken momma does for her cheeps!!!

Tab's chicken obsession :

Does anyone know of anyone with blue orpington hens or pullets for sale around here? DH would like to get one.

Actually DH told me after I posted that he would actually like hatching eggs in the spring after our hatch that is running right now. Does anyone know of anyone in NY with blue or lavender orpingtons?
