NY chicken lover!!!!

I hope that today takes a turn for the positive. We have someone new trying to plow our driveway, not sure how that is going, don't want to stare. Caught a hen trying to eat an egg for breakfast, and when I snatched it away from her and put it in the bucket with the droppings I was scooping, one of the roosters was extremely interested in it until I covered it....then came in to find the dog on the couch which I am trying to keep for humans. And the seven eggs I had planned to use to make a pound cake were missing from the refridge.

Don't think the stars are well aligned for me this morning. My husband confessed to the missing eggs, he likes to give them to people. I am mourning the pound cake, though. Since I am trying to eat less wheat and use a large variety of grains, I try to use wheat at it's best...Pound Cake is some of the best use of wheat.

I have to agree!! I love pound cake!!!

Dont know if this is her problem ..was reading this from one of bees threads
I read where someone had issues with healthy chickens all of a sudden having leg problems described this way:

"signs of paralysis. Their curled toes put them off balance and they would rock back on their hocks. In advanced stages, their legs would scoot out behind them and they would scoot about pathetically on their breasts"....

"After consulting my Merk Vetrinary Manual, I determined that it was curly toe syndrome caused by a riboflavin deficiency. Grabbing some beef liver from the freezer, I fed it to the chicks and the problem stopped immediately. Even the paralyzed chicks began walking again. Since putting brewers yeast in the ration, we haven't had the problem."

I might consider this except that it is just the one hen. She seems somewhat better. Standing and I did give her chick starter which is higher in protien. I also gave her some water with Sulmet, since it couldn't hurt, but will switch her to vitamins. She was beginning to look better before the Sulmet but I figured what the heck.

She's not wobbly or anything was just walking on her hocks like she couldn't stand up. No sign of egg boundness and eating and pooping just fine.

We put our Holiday off because of the Flu. Did not want to expose the family. We are planning on weekend of January 12. Drinking a lot of orange juice and trying to rest. GET RID OF THIS. WOW Amy two incudators. You will be hatching.

Please be sure to get some rest. Stay in bed if you can.

Lots of snow and more to clean. Just did enough to get through to the chickens and give them water. Was late putting up the plastic so there is snow in the runs, but will do it before the sun sets. Will post pics.

Take care and stay warm,

Rancher

Happy hens = more eggs.

I've been doing this for a while, so I get emails every day from people wanting chicks & eggs. I can't ship this week or next because of the holiday, but I will start shipping end of January.
I also go to the NEPC show in Springfield in January and sell a lot there.

Where did you get your Birchens? Would you consider a trade in hatching eggs?

Hi Peggy!

from Brooklyn! I know what you're thinking. What's a person with chickens doing in Brooklyn? Well, I can have hens, but I can't have roosters. Since you can't bring the girl to the farm (not yet), you gotta bring the farm to the girl!

Hi Peggy , Welcome To the New York Thread ..alot of towns / citys have that same rule - no roosters . Is that your chick with the hat ?
How many Ladies do you have ? I have 8 ladies & 1 roo . I am out in the country near the Seneca river & Jacks Reef or Jordan New York or east of Syracuse .
Did you get much snow ? we got around 12 inches out here . Deborah

Welcome to Happyhen102!

Haven't been sleeping good. I'm having trouble not thinking about things. Today is going to be a long one and I need more comfortable shoes.
On a different note, I let the chickens out yesterday. They ran to the end of the barn looked out and seemed to say heck no. They then started to explore the other side of the barn. It's funny to watch the chicken stampede when they are let loose to range. They run and flap there wings to move faster. In this case they were excited to be loose and then saw the snow. Funny chickens!
