NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: Last year was the first time I let them actally hatch chicks. They didn't have good hatches, but the few that did hatch, they raised well. It was summer, and I let them do what they wanted since I don't incubate during the summer months..I need a break then!

I was going to order from a hatchery to get cornish (not finding many for sale, eggs or birds) and getting straight run so I don't feel like a chick killer. It looks like there is a poultry show at the state fairgrounds in June. Don't they usually have a sale area? Perhaps that would be a good place to get a few quality birds in the hard to find breeds.
Yes, there is a show the 1st Sunday in June every year at the Fairgrounds. Lots of birds for sale from breeders.

Sometimes those of us who usually have a "lot" of chicks for sale, will post here that we are selling, etc. Just keep a lookout.

There is a NY breeder of Cornish. If you want, pm me & I'll find out when they will have chicks. They are North of Syracuse.

Excellent! Is she goes broody at a more convenient time, I will let her sit. I so love to see a good mama hen with chicks!! Who needs TV? How many did you let your hen sit on?

We have talked about renting a place in a park, but wondered about bringing chickens onto public land. (Many people bring birds to sell, exchange, give away, add to the auction and deliver to people they presold to, as you know) IF the park didn't have a problem with that and if participants didn't have a problem with bringing their birds into such a situation it is a wonderful idea, since very few people have the facilities to host such a large gathering.
Many State parks allow dogs and I plan on riding in one a few months from now....I think it may be allowed.

I am gonna have chicks early May. Annie (HappyHensNY) always has way way way more chicks than she can keep. We are both close to you geographically. Featherz comes down to the Train station in Rensselaer and might have too many chicks/hens in the near future. (I have a couple of her birds when she downsized last year, they are wonderful girls) Hmmm...who else is close to Troy? Sometimes we get a "train" going and someone will go out and pick up birds from one of the folks in the Western part of the state and bring them back for all of us to share. (Throw some money in the pot for gas)

And we try to get a bunch of us together once a year to just talk and talk and usually chickens change hands at that gathering. Right now, no one has stepped up to host this year's gathering...but it's early in the year yet. (I soooo wish I could host, but I have absolutely no parking here cuz some genius put the septic and leach feild at the end of the driveway. grrr)

I'm about 20 minutes from Troy.

Well now my Grandmother held that very rule. Everyone in the family was fine with it til my grandfather died. No one ate meat until they were sure he'd been in the ground for a good long time.

I don't know your status but if you have one I'd warn your husband to keep working not to retire for a good long time.

or it's the crock pot for him.
thank you rancher for making me laugh this morning. I have this picture of your family now coming over to grandmother's house and being afraid to eat the pot roast. I'm still laughing.

TSC also sell cornish straight run chicks or at least they did last year.

I wonder if Thatcher Park would allow a get together. I work with a girl who also works at Indian Ladder. Maybe we could arrange something there. They would probably love the business and they already have parking, live animals and food (when they re-open) and they have the best cider donuts. Let me know. It doesn't hurt to look into it.
