RIR's are really good layers. Mine lay well but my white leghorns can outlay any of my chickens hands down.the best layers of the standard breeds are rhode island reds, highest producers of eggs of all the heavy breeds. heavy breeds do better in the northeast. if the breed that you had was black they might have been black australorps
I'm heading out now to lock up all 9 coops. I'll tell the Runners what you saidStony- if I could have ducks I would get some like yours. I love your runners. They are beautiful!!!
I do the same, but it's outpacing me this year with the mud. Have topped off the shavings at least every weekend and they are gross too quickly. Ick. I am planning on doing my twice yearly cleaning a bit early this year.I'm still 2 months off from my once a year coop cleanings. I am due to top off the shavings with some fresh. Gotta love deep litter.

Good Luck with that ..they seem to love muck / mud ! It rained here all day yesterday ...My chickens looked like Drowned Chickens ..
Today they have mud feet ..as evidenced by my mud coat ..
I am grateful for the snow ..it thins the mud some
