NY chicken lover!!!!

Just finished a new brooder a little while ago- it's got a big window in the front of it so I can take photos of the little peeps from an angle other than 'above'. It seemed about time I built a real brooder instead of using big tupperware bins or cardboard boxes assembled into some kind of makeshift chick castle. Thought I'd share a few pictures.

And I'm belatedly realizing I ended up taking more photos of the chicks (RIRs and Silkies) than the brooder itself... oops!

What pictures of Brooders ..? We want to see Chicks !

Hello, this will be my first time raising chikens, I have gotten tons of ideas for coops...I wanted to know what is the best laying breed to start with? I had chickens many years ago but I cannot remember what we had. (they were all black) I found some helpful tips on rasing happy chickens. Any help anyone can give would be great.. We live in North Central Pennsylvania...so we get snow and rain and hot summers...Thanks!!!!!

Welcome JB!! Leghorns or leghorn crosses are the best layers. My personal favorite chickens are buckeyes!! They are dual purpose though.

The terrorists coop (aka rir) after the last snowfall. Of course I was to blame for the evil white stuff. Yes, the divas coop is parked behind. Yes, we had to shovel out the run and a path all around both coops. Who needs a gym?

I had to chuckle at them all staring ("glaring") out the window -- their disgust is palpable.

You have a very sweet set-up...love the terrorists' coop!

Haven't been on in 2 days and wow over 100 posts to catch up on!

Yesterday morning was scary. I go into work at 3am and yesterday there was 4-5 inches of slush on the road, it was still sleeting, and the plow hadn't gone by yet. I did a 180 a couple driveways down from mine going only 30mph and was blessed to miss the ditch. Scared me silly! I pulled into my neighbors drive and got turned the right way so I could crawl the rest of the way to work. By 9am couldn't even tell the roads had been that bad only a few hours prior. Besides my scary drive I have a cold and haven't been sleeping well. My butt is feeling pretty kicked. Looking forward to the weekend so I can hopefully get some rest.

I think I wouldn't mind being a SAHM or a least go part time if I was able but I make more money than DH and carry the benefits. I think its great that many of you were able to! Baby #3 is going to make our lives busier and different, but richer in another sense.

We have 2 male guineas that we would like to sell if any one is interested. Just PM me.

I hope you can get some rest as well Tab!! When are you due?

I have been reading and hearing so much good stuff about Buckeyes. They sound like great all-around chickens; I've heard their hunting prowess is impressive.

They look so sad to be stuck inside dont they? :( Mine got out for a bit yesterday and today and they were so happy! I can't wait for the weather to be nicer so they can be out everyday, I hate to keep em cooped up :(

My older brothers raced pigeons, but we never talked about the hawk situation. I may call my older brother to have a talk. I haven't seen this one for a while. I hope I don't, but will be buying a gun just in case. AND taking other measures like planting strategically.

Kit Kat nice brooder. I hope you have many happy brooding experiences with it. I like the window part very much.

Anyone want to give some input on computer printers? Mine is on it's last leg I think. It won't grab the paper and I have no idea how to fix it. Plus sometimes it seems sluggish. Which might be the ink sticking due to the missed paper events. Jets might be plugged a bit.
Rancher, I have an HP laser color printer and love it. I use it because of my labels for my business products. Highly recommend, but definitely go with LASER.

Welcome! I'm guessing they were Black Australorps. I have 18 of them and have been very pleased. They have just begun to lay recently and so far their eggs are a bit smaller than my productions and red sex links, but I'm guessing it's because they are still young. They are not full sized yet. Highly recommend productions, sex links, tetra tints (a newer mix from TSC I was told) and australorps. 2 of my tetra tints lay green or blueish/green eggs.
On printers, we have an HP that is supposed to print photos well, and I hate it. I buy the large packages of ink, but don't print too much, so that sounds frugal, right? The HP tells me that the ink has expired, and to use it will void the warranty. It also has trouble every time I do print, and I have to mess around with the paper tray until it will print. When I'm done I turn it off with its switch, but every time it accuses me of improper shut down. We have had it replaced once already. This is not my favorite machine. Have to stop thinking about the hammer.
Is this an inkjet or laser? I have a color HP laser and love it.
