NY chicken lover!!!!

Haven't been on in 2 days and wow over 100 posts to catch up on!

Yesterday morning was scary. I go into work at 3am and yesterday there was 4-5 inches of slush on the road, it was still sleeting, and the plow hadn't gone by yet. I did a 180 a couple driveways down from mine going only 30mph and was blessed to miss the ditch. Scared me silly! I pulled into my neighbors drive and got turned the right way so I could crawl the rest of the way to work. By 9am couldn't even tell the roads had been that bad only a few hours prior. Besides my scary drive I have a cold and haven't been sleeping well. My butt is feeling pretty kicked. Looking forward to the weekend so I can hopefully get some rest.

I think I wouldn't mind being a SAHM or a least go part time if I was able but I make more money than DH and carry the benefits. I think its great that many of you were able to! Baby #3 is going to make our lives busier and different, but richer in another sense.

We have 2 male guineas that we would like to sell if any one is interested. Just PM me.

I have done that one time in our old pick-up truck (180) and hope I never have the pleasure again. Glad you didn't get hurt! Hope you're feeling better and over your cold soon. Ugh!

Kit Kat, what a nice brooder! Much nicer than the cardboard box mine get!

Rancher, it should be fine to send the cuttings like that, I'm not worried about the postage...but oh boy how do I choose?! I might need some hatching eggs sometime in April or May if you're up for that - if that cost more in postage for you I'll be sure to re-iburse you.

I'm crossing my fingers that my hardy kiwi's come up this spring - I got cuttings from a friend last year, but the dry summer we had didn't help much. I'm not sure I have any left. I broke down and bought the soaker hose way to late.

Tomorrow is hatch day for one of the eggs!!! I can't wait to see pictures (which of course I will share!)

I agree with the Epson being worthless. It's a long story I can't type all of it out.  But the replacement stayed in the box and was donated to the school.  I just could not look at it without wanting to take a hammer to it. It was the second replacement and by then I'd had it with Epson.

I have Lexmark right now and it was fine, but Lord have mercy they don't last very long. I am looking forward to getting a wireless one though.  I need the whole sha-bang. Scanner, fax and everything.

Gosh Rancher you sound awesome!
[Now Ladies[/B],  let me be clear on this.  I am a strong advocate for SAHM's.  If I was a girl and planning on having kids, I would be very clear with Mr. Right that I am NOT going to be doing double duty.  I'm going to be  a SAHM.  No if's and's or buts.
I have often said when women decided to go outside the home to work they were  CRAZY!   I see DW and I feel so bad for her.  Women will always do more than a man.  Womens' lib my you know what!
Women had more control than they knew.  DW controls, what I eat, wear and in many cases what I do.  Or maybe they just do now that things have changed.

And I will admit women working has given my daughters more options.  Anyhow I just think a girl should be clear on what she wants BEFORE she marries.  Trust me ladies don't settle. Be patient.  IMO girls/women need to be involved in clubs, associations or places that have to do with their interests.  You won't find a good man, in one who spends all his time in a bar or clubbing and he won't find a good woman there either.

Lynzii, if you want to stay home and not work and your husband says go for it.  I'll be glad for you and him and the kids.  I'm just going through a trial right now and could use a job.  House work is  really not my thing.  There is painting to do but it's to cold for that.  :)    There is some work to do in the basement.  I'll have to look into that.  :D

OK I'm done.  Now to those Ducks and Silkies.  I may not get Ducks and I sure ain't getting Silkies.  I may just have a hole dug for the water to drain into and a bridge built just for aethetics.
sounds pretty!

Cass, or Rancher (since you have all the county library books), are muscovys the only ones who eat flies, or do all ducks? My land literally hums in the spring for a few days with the cluster flies waking up. My husband might like ducks. And there are sometimes those biting flies....hmmm. Sales pitch coming on.
i hope im not intruding here by offering my opinion but while other ducks do consume some flies and other insects, muscovies do a particularly good job of it. muscovies will also eat small rodents.

On printers, we have an HP that is supposed to print photos well, and I hate it. I buy the large packages of ink, but don't print too much, so that sounds frugal, right? The HP tells me that the ink has expired, and to use it will void the warranty. It also has trouble every time I do print, and I have to mess around with the paper tray until it will print. When I'm done I turn it off with its switch, but every time it accuses me of improper shut down. We have had it replaced once already. This is not my favorite machine. Have to stop thinking about the hammer.

My older brothers raced pigeons, but we never talked about the hawk situation. I may call my older brother to have a talk. I haven't seen this one for a while. I hope I don't, but will be buying a gun just in case. AND taking other measures like planting strategically.

Kit Kat nice brooder. I hope you have many happy brooding experiences with it. I like the window part very much.

Anyone want to give some input on computer printers? Mine is on it's last leg I think. It won't grab the paper and I have no idea how to fix it. Plus sometimes it seems sluggish. Which might be the ink sticking due to the missed paper events. Jets might be plugged a bit.
as far as printers go i recommend cannon printers. many companise practically give the printers away but charge way to much for the ink cartridges, several models of cannon come with regular cartridges, not starter cartridges already in them and they get good mileage out of each cartridge and they are not too expensive.

Ducks are the best. Right now we only have 11. But duck broody season hasn't started yet. 9 of our ducks are female. Hoping to at the very least double the number of female ducks this season. Don't tell my chickens, but I prefer my ducks over my chickens.

From the completely entertaining perspective as well as the ease of raising them. Ducks welcome newbies with open wings. No peckingorder issues here adding new ducks ever. Getting the right duck gets you a LOT of jumbo eggs a season, and ducks play all day long. They get along with chickens better than most chickens get along with one another.

Hello, this will be my first time raising chikens, I have gotten tons of ideas for coops...I wanted to know what is the best laying breed to start with? I had chickens many years ago but I cannot remember what we had. (they were all black) I found some helpful tips on rasing happy chickens. Any help anyone can give would be great.. We live in North Central Pennsylvania...so we get snow and rain and hot summers...Thanks!!!!!
the best layers of the standard breeds are rhode island reds, highest producers of eggs of all the heavy breeds. heavy breeds do better in the northeast. if the breed that you had was black they might have been black australorps

Phew, cuz I didn't know the answer. LOL Glad you chimed in, brahmapapa.

no prob Cass, i love muscovies, they are basically silent, well behaved, they are great for breast meat too, very lean, not like peking ducks. I love the taste of peking but as i said muscovies are leaner. a side note...as far as i know all domestic ducks trace thier roots back to the mallard except the muscovy duck.
